Former England and Tottenham winger Darren Anderton marked the last match of his career in style when he scored the winner for Bournemouth against Chester City in League Two.

Anderton, 36, said that the match would be his final in professional football and he finished an 18-year career with an 88th-minute shot to seal a 1-0 home win for the struggling South Coast club.

The ball broke to second-half substitute Anderton after Mark Moseley's cross was half-cleared and he drilled home from the edge of the box.

Anderton almost scored moments earlier with a long-range free-kick.

Chester went down to 10 men when Tony Dinning was shown a straight red card for elbowing Danny Hollands on 82 minutes.

Anderton, who has 30 caps for his national team and started - and scored - during the 1998 World Cup, began his career at Portsmouth in 1990 but is mostly known for a 12-year stint at Spurs.

Injuries affected the latter stages of his White Hart Lane stay and he had spells at Birmingham City and Wolverhampton Wanderers before moving to Bournemouth in 2006.

The Cherries lie second bottom after the win although have a positive points tally for the first time this season, having been deducted 17 points for financial problems.

League Two results on Saturday:

Aldershot 3-2 Wycombe; Bournemouth 1-0 Chester; Bradford 1-1 Dagenham and Redbridge; Exeter 2-1 Lincoln; Gillingham 2-1 Chesterfield; Luton 3-1 Barnet; Notts County 1-0 Morecambe; Port Vale 2-1 Grimsby; Macclesfield 1-1 Bury; Shrewsbury 1-0 Rotherham
