Ivan Klasnic's double strike helped struggling Nantes defeat seven-time champions Lyon 2-1 in Ligue 1.

The leaders opened the scoring just before half-time with a close-range shot by Frederic Piquionne but Klasnic (pictured) equalised on 59 minutes after keeper Hugo Lloris could only parry an effort by David de Freitas.

Croatia striker Klasnic then made it 2-1 a minute from time, converting a penalty after a foul by Lamine Gassama.

Lyon, who had been beaten only twice before in the league this season, were without suspended playmaker Juninho and injured top scorer Karim Benzema while others were rested ahead of the midweek Champions League match against Bayern Munich.

With 34 points from 17 games, Lyon are three points clear of Marseille who beat Nice 2-1.

Nantes are fifth from bottom.

Rennes, in third, have 30 points after drawing 1-1 at Caen .

Benjamin Nivet opened the scoring for the home team before Moussa Sow levelled in the 76th minute.

Bordeaux moved up to fourth on 29 points thanks to a 2-1 win over bottom club Valenciennes a day previously.

Marseille went ahead after 14 minutes when Nice midfielder Olivier Echouafni deflected a corner into his own net.

The hosts made it 2-0 just before halftime with a penalty from Mamadou Niang.

Habib Bamogo silenced the Stade Velodrome three minutes after the restart when he fired the ball into the far corner of the net and Nice also hit the crossbar through Chaouki Ben Saasa in injury time.

Before the game chairman Pape Diouf called on the crowd not to demonstrate against the jail sentence handed to a Marseille fan by a Spanish judge.

Santos Mirasierra was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for assaulting police officers when Marseille visited Atletico Madrid in the Champions League in October.

"The future of the club is at stake," said Diouf. "We mustn't prove right the people who think Marseille supporters are animals.

"We'll do all we can to get Santos out of jail."

In the day's two other Ligue 1 matches, Lille drew 1-1 at home to Toulouse and St Etienne beat visiting Le Havre 2-0.

  3. It's about time OM started getting some breaks from the refs, evening out some of the bogus points they gave OL earlier this year. And the announcers in the Lyon Nantes game are wrong period to say that Fred deserved a penalty. Replays clearly showed that he was not trying to continue play but had begun falling forward and throwing his arms up before the tackle
