Spalletti Hopes Mancini Stays

Mon 07 Jan, 12:09 PM

Roma coach Luciano Spalletti is hoping winger Mancini will sign a new contract with the Giallorossi.

The Brazil international's current deal at the Stadio Olimpico expires in June 2009 and Roma must now decide whether to cash in on the 27-year-old or agree fresh terms with a player reportedly a target for Manchester City and Lyon.

The club have opened talks with Mancini and Spalletti is hoping it will lead to the player committing his long-term future to Roma.

"It's not certain that Mancini will leave," said Spalletti.

"I think he wants to reach an agreement with the club. I have never heard Mancini say he wants to leave.

"The likelihood is that he will remain with us and intentions are always crucial."

Mancini has emerged as a key player for Roma with a series of dazzling displays which enabled Roma to finish second in Serie A last season.
