Swindon Town consortium leader Andrew Fitton has confirmed the club will appoint Maurice Malpas as their new manager when a takeover deal is finalised.
Fitton revealed that Malpas impressed him greatly when interviewed for the job.
He told the club's website: "We went out to find the best candidate and we believe we have found what we were looking for.
"Maurice impressed us from the start. His playing career is second to none - and he played over 600 games for Dundee United, went to two World Cups and played in a UEFA Cup final.
"He was head and shoulders above the other candidates we interviewed. He will offer Swindon Town stability, leadership and discipline. He is highly competent, passionate and loyal - which is something that this club needs.
"Swindon fans should trust this appointment, because he has a lot to offer us. He has worked with the likes of Jim McLean and Archie Knox in his career and managed at Motherwell, in addition to coaching experience at Dundee United. Maurice wants to commit to Swindon and wants to make his mark in the English game."
Fitton also revealed that current caretaker-boss David Byrne will be named as assistant manager to Malpas.
"Maurice and David know each other already, and I believe they can work together well," he said.
"I believe passionately in youth development, and both Maurice and David have a proven track record in that area."
