Eurosport - Mon, 07 Jan 22:12:00 2008

Eurosport.yahoo.com has sorted through the myriad Cup ties at the weekend to tell you who was rated and who was not by the nation's newspapers.

FOOTBALL 2007-2008 Carling Cup Doyle Mifsud - 0

How it works

We tot up the marks out of 10 awarded in five national newspapers - this week The Sun, Daily Mirror, Daily Mail, The Times and Daily Star - to reach a total out of 50. The top player in each position will be rewarded with a spot in the team of the week, while the worst scorers will be named and shamed in our Flops XI.

Team of the Week

Player of the Week was Michael Mifsud (43) of Coventry. The nippy Maltese right-sided midfielder followed his exploits against Manchester United in the League Cup at Old Trafford with a sterling performance and brace to help Coventry stun Blackburn 4-1 at Ewood Park.

Manchester City's Joe Hart (41) is picked in goal for his clean sheet in the stalemate at Upton Park against West Ham, while the back four is made up of lower-league players: Alan Goodall (41) of Luton Town is at right-back for helping the Hatters draw with Liverpool while Oldham centre-back pairing Stefan Stam (41) - no relation to Big Jaap - and Reuben Hazell (41) as well as left-back Kelvin Lomax (42) make the grade.

Non-league Chasetown's midfield prober Ben Steane (40) matched the score of another Latics player, Gary McDonald (40), while it's a toss-up between Man City's Martin Petrov and Jay Tabb of Coventry on the left. We'll go with Tabb - no relation of snooker ref Michaela, we are told.

Up front Eduardo (39) continued his hot streak for Arsenal at Burnley, yet on the same score we must pick Drew Talbot and Craig Davies of Luton and Oldham respectively for their heroics.

Idiots of the Week

In goal there were a few contenders, most notably Lewis Price of Derby County after his 'mare against Sheffield Wednesday, but Everton's Stefan Wessels (20) gets the nod for allowing McDonald to send an admittedly tricky strike past him for Oldham.

Sunderland, 3-0 losers at home to Wigan, have three of the back four in right-back Nyron Nosworthy (21), centre-half Paul McShane (17) - who has the lowest score of the week after a comical own-goal - and Danny Collins (21) on the left. Bolton's Gerald Cid (21) completes the defence for letting Sheffield United win 1-0 at the Reebok.

The Black Cats also lay claim to the right side of midfield thanks to Roy O'Donovan (24). Tommy Gravesen (21) clearly had a shocker in midfield for Everton and is joined by Blackburn's Aaron Mokoena (23) while Hameur Bouazza (24) of Fulham takes the left-sided berth.

It looked like Jamaican Luton Shelton was going to be selected in an idiots' striking slot despite the Blades' victory, yet the little-seen Maceo Rigters (23) of Blackburn was ultimately joined by youngster Martyn Waghorn (21), recently brought into the Sunderland side by Roy Keane. Poor lad.
