Ex-Ferrari boss: Alonso is best driver

Eurosport - Wed, 07 Jan 13:40:00 2009

Former Ferrari team boss Cesare Fiorio has claimed that Fernando Alonso is a better driver than Lewis Hamilton.

FORMULA 1 2008 Fernando Alonso Renault - 0

"In situations like this [with the raft of new technical and aerodynamic regulations for 2009], a team can gain an advantage over another because its engineers have had a hunch that turns out to work better," the 69-year-old reasoned. "In that context I have no doubts - I would prefer to have Alonso in my team, because for me he is still the best driver around."

Fiorio, the man who gave Alonso his F1 test debut with Minardi in 1999, added that an Alonso-Ferrari combination would give the entire field cause for concern.

"He is stronger even than Lewis Hamilton; the two are equal in terms of raw speed, but Fernando has a lower propensity to make mistakes. He's consistent, has a good rhythm inside the car and he's intelligent.

"He and Ferrari would represent an exceptional duo. In winning the constructors' world championship, Maranello showed that it had worked the best, both in the factory and at the races - but if you miss out on the drivers' title, perhaps the fault for that lies with the man in the cockpit."

Former F1 team owner Giancarlo Minardi echoed Fiorio's comments.

"It's undeniable that for Ferrari such a driver would be very useful.

"At the end of the day, he's the driver who up until now has given Hamilton the hardest time in equal equipment. He could beat him easily."

  2. I can't believe that numbnuts is still going on about my alleged "alter egos". Oh well, whatever floats his boat!!
He/she obviously has a lot of time to waste. Anyway, to those of you who know me, I can assure you that this is my only identity. I am too old to play those kind of games. Besides, some of my alleged "alter egos" posted comments at the exact same time as I did. I am decent with a keyboard, but not good enough to post from two different accounts at the same time....

  7. Vinnydawg - thanks for including me in your list - Phew !!!! I try not to read any of the rubbish but am in danger of getting RSI in my index finger due to too much scrolling! Roll on March when the strange ones will hopefully be drowned out by the rest of us talking about the races in a companionable kind of way. As if we can't recognise our 'mates' - 'by their fruits shall ye know them'. I'm not traditionally religious but since joining these sites, keep finding myself quoting from the Bible !

  11. I can't believe this is still the "off topic" of the day. What is the point of it all. Does anyone really care who Marnio or Touronroute is? Do we really care if people are posting under different or multiple pseudonyms? If you don't like what people here are posting then just scan until you see someone you find worth reading. I've been reading DanielS's comments for quite some time now as well as MikeQ, Voodoopenguin, Tifosi4eva, Gingergitt, MEJenner, and even Saggitarius58. Hell I even read Marnio just for laughs because he can really write some whacko bul***it when he leaves the mouse alone.

  13. Ok people I gotta say I viewed jenstars original post last night and didnt even notice the massive Hughjorghen post which bumped jenstarfs right outa sight. But I was surprised when exactly the same post by Hughjorghen turned up again today after jenstarf posted new stuff regarding forza Ferrari very sloppy. Today during the conversation with forza ferrari jenstarf also noted the sudden appearance of one kurtmagrigatt which after checking out the posts in the bmw article mentioned by jenstarf does indeed sound very similar to forza Ferrari and anyway it is an amazing coincidence for this poster to also suddenly pop up again today the moment forza is accused of being slim j. Then jenstarf suffers a ton of abuse is blamed for being marnio and all the others. Next all jenstarfs pretty unoffensive posts are pulled as are the rather incriminating posts initially made by forza ferrari which jenstarf initially pointed too as evidence. Forza Ferrari then accuses jenstarf of being marnio.

Later jenstarf posts again and immediately the posts are accompanied by slim j and marnio posts which looks as if jenstarf is one and the same or at least marnio, jenstarf immediately notices this and points it out and lo and behold they too disappear to make a fool of jenstarf. The marnio posts are replaced by bernards. All in all I think it has been a pretty extreme reaction to jenstarfs accusations did it warrant having all jenstarfs postings removed when marnio and Bernard are routinely left up. A really extreme reaction which not only removed jenstarfs posts but also destroyed the context of the argument as it unfolded. Is there something greater at stake here, it is all really rather trivial guys but then that is why the responses of certain parties has seemed far too extreme for my liking.

  15. @ tt 113,
I'm glad someone else mentioned about Alonso refusing to share his telemetry and data with Hamilton, I always wondered why at the time, and then when Stepneygate kicked off I suspected that this was the point when he started trying to us the info he was getting from Ferrari

  19. It just happens one drives in a mediocre car and makes miracles and the other drives a top car and makes many mistakes with lucky escapes enough to score more points. And perhaps because of this I feel more inclined to applaud the one in the inferior car and hate the one in the better car but I have not bad feelings out of the race. I take my hat off to the winner. Good night to everybody and let peace reign all over this New Year 2009 because at the moment it's really cold out there!!!!
