Eurosport - Sat, 07 Feb 19:24:00 2009

Player ratings for England's 36-11 defeat of Italy in their Six Nations clash at Twickenham.

Phil Vickery - England - 0

ENGLAND

DELON ARMITAGE: Always an attacking threat with the ball in hand. Received a let-off after having kick charged down - 6/10.

PAUL SACKEY: Was again starved of possession as England failed to play with any real width - 5.

JAMIE NOON: A late replacement and a typically solid performance but England need more adventure at outside centre - 5.

RIKI FLUTEY: Scored his first Test try but still to reproduce his best form on the international arena - 6.

MARK CUETO: Had little ball to work with but took his chances well and marked his return to the Test arena with a deserved try - 7.

ANDY GOODE: A great start with the try but it went downhill from there and more wayward kicking will be punished by the Welsh next week - 5.

HARRY ELLIS: Named man of the match and scored two tries but not Ellis' best game in an England jersey - 6.

PHIL VICKERY (pictured): The Raging Bull produced another wholehearted effort for his country as England showed some improvement up front from the autumn - 6.

LEE MEARS: An improvement on his performance against New Zealand but England's lineout did not fire - 6.

ANDREW SHERIDAN: Struggled against Leicester's powerful Martin Castrogiovanni - 5.

STEVE BORTHWICK: The captain nicked the odd Italian lineout but was quiet on England's ball and knocked back in the tackle too often - 5.

NICK KENNEDY: Another confident performance from the London Irish lock at the lineout and in the loose - 6.

JAMES HASKELL: A dynamic performance from the Wasps flanker was tainted slightly by a harsh sin-binning in the first half - 7.

STEFFON ARMITAGE: The London Irish flanker had a quiet debut and will have learned what it takes at the highest level - 6.

NICK EASTER: Not his biggest game but solid nonetheless as England improved their breakdown work - 6.

REPLACEMENTS

JOE WORSLEY (for Armitage, 55): Worked hard when he replaced Armitage - 6.

DYLAN HARTLEY (for Mears, 55): Provided England with a more physical front row presence when he came on - 6.

BEN FODEN (for Ellis, 61): Played with confidence and laid down a marker for his future - 6.

SHANE GERAGHTY (for Flutey, 61): Sin-binned shortly after coming on - 5.

JULIAN WHITE (for Sheridan, 61): Solidified England's pack - 6.

TOM CROFT (for Kennedy, 78): Late replacement in the second row - 5.

MATHEW TAIT (for Noon, 78): Hardly given a chance to show his qualities - 5.

ITALY

ANDREA MASI: Spent all afternoon kicking the ball down the middle of the field - 5.

KAINE ROBERTSON: Helped create the only Italy try but no major threat in offence or defence - 5.

GONZALO CANALE: With little attacking ball he was anonymous - 5.

GONZALO GARCIA: Exposed by the decision to play Mauro Bergamasco at scrum-half - 5.

MIRCO BERGAMASCO: Scored the try but wasted on the wing - 5.

ANDREA MARCATO: Only lasted half an hour before being injured but suffered from desperately poor service - 5.

MAURO BERGAMASCO: The experiment to play the flanker at scrum-half was a disaster - 2

SALVATORE PERUGINI: Italy competed well in the front row and Perugini scrummaged both sides - 6.

FABIO ONGARO: Struggled for consistency in the lineout - 5.

MARTIN CASTROGIOVANNI: World class and gave Andrew Sheridan a tough afternoon - 6.

SANTIAGO DELLAPE: Italy made mistakes in the lineout but produce some solid defence- 5.

MARCO BORTOLAMI: A quiet afternoon from the usually inspirational lock - 5.

JOSH SOLE: Had his work cut out as England looked to put pressure on Bergamasco at every opportunity - 5.

ALISSANDRO ZANNI: No Bergamasco in the back row, but had one or two good moments with the ball in hand - 5.

SERGIO PARISSE: Led by example and probably the outstanding player on the field but cannot do it all by himself - 8.

REPLACEMENTS

LUKE McLEAN (for Marcato, 31): Brought a bit more direction to the Italian side - 6.

GIULIO TONIOLATTI (for Mauro Bergamasco, 40): Inexperienced at Test level but is at least a genuine scrum-half - 5.

MATTEO PRATICHETTI (for Garcia, 55): Little impact as Italy had no real attacking shape - 5.

CARLO FESTUCCIA (for Ongaro, 55): Fresh legs but no major contribution - 5.

TOMMASO REATO (for Bortolami, 56): Thankless task coming on with game already lost - 5.

CARLOS NIETO (for Perugini, 62): The Gloucester prop competed well - 5.

JEAN-FRANCOIS MONATURIOL (for Dellape, 80): Easy cap for the lock - 5.

  1. Foden a 6? The same as Ellis? I don't think so. It was nothing like a confident performance and did nothing to help his cause for the scrum half jersy. Most of the ball he got from the ruck, he kicked (and poorly at that) and his passing was not good enough. He should have been brought on for Armitage where he might have done something other than waste any quick ball England managed to get.

  2. Just what i was thinking Matt, do the people who write these things even watch the game ?

  3. England's lineout did not fire? It was perfect, without a single loss and numerous steals!
