Farrar sprints to Trofeo Palma glory
Garmin rider Tyler Farrar won his first race of 2011 with a sprint victory in the Trofeo Palma in Majorca.
The race, contested over 10 laps of an 11.6km circuit, looked destined for a sprint finish as the two major breakaways were swallowed up by the peloton with time remaining.
And in the final stretches American Farrar showed his class to get the better of German rider Marcel Kittel and Francisco Ventoso, who had to settle for second and third places.
"It feels good to get a win on the books early in the season," said Farrar. "[The Tour] Down Under was a bit of a frustrating experience, so it was nice to confirm that my form is on the right track. The boys did a terrific job as usual."
The race began with a protest after a number of riders took to the starting line wearing race radios, forbidden by the International Cycling Union in 2011.
The race jury said no action would be taken against those protesting the rule change.
