Euro 2012 - Paper Round: Capello ready to quit now

Tue, 07 Feb 08:52:00 2012

The papers are still having a field day over what happens next in the England captaincy scandal after Fabio Capello said at the weekend he completely disagreed with the decision to strip John Terry of the role.

2011 England Fabio Capello - 0

There are a few different sub-plots running through the papers with the Mirror's take being the most dramatic as their back page screams: "Capello's ready to quit" with the rather cheeky addition of "(well, no one's going to stop you, Fabio)."

In an exclusive written by John Cross, the paper claims: "Capello is so frustrated with the Football Association over the John Terry fiasco that he could go even before the European Championship Finals.

"And Capello is also facing a dressing room backlash as his unerring support for Terry as captain has upset some players and is in danger of causing a serious rift."

The Daily Express leads their sports coverage with the latter of those two points as they claim that "Fabio's Facing Revolt" in their backpage exclusive credited to Matt Law and Paul Joyce.

An unnamed 'source close to the England dressing room' told them: "Fabio Capello has demonstrated he has no empathy with his players. There are a lot of opinions in the squad about the situation regarding John Terry, but they have been kept private.

"For Capello to go public makes the whole thing worse and opens up a new can of worms. There is a strong feeling he should have kept his mouth shut.”

Finally, the Times believe that there is at least one person happy with Capello's unwavering support for Terry, and that unsurprisingly is Terry himself.

"Terry rules out quitting after support from Capello" runs their backpage story as they report that Terry will make himself available for selection for the European Championship despite having lost the captaincy.

"(Terry) has decided against retirement from international football immediately. Instead, he will wait to find if he is named in Capello's squad for the friendly against Holland this month before confirming his next move," the paper says.

Capello is expected to select Terry for the Dutch clash if the Chelsea defender recovers from the knee injury that saw him miss Chelsea's 3-3 draw with Manchester United.

In non-Terry/non-Luis Suarez news (covered elsewhere on the site), Arsene Wenger has admitted his admiration for Lille’s £30m-rated Eden Hazard - but the Arsenal boss says he is under pressure each season to make between £15m and £20m in profit on transfers, in news that may not go down well with Arsenal fans. 1. sooner the Italian spy goes the better for English football......people forget he is Italian and has no interest in English football other than the money he gets. If he was that good he would be the Italy's manager.

  5. 1. JT innocent until proven guilty. Although I can't help but think he is guilty but he must have some sort of defence to deny it.
    2. The only reason Capello's nationality is an issue is because he hasn't won anything. I personally can't think of an English manager that I believe would emerge victorious from the last world cup or even get into the semi's with the players available (The ones that went to south africa and the ones that stayed at home). If we won something we wouldn't care if he was german.
    3. The FA are a bunch of morons that don't know how to run an organisation.
    4. The English press will never allow us to win anything. The whole country needs to pull in the same direction. Print the rubbish in July - afterwards. The JT story is easy reporting with no real talented journalism anywhere. It doesn't help when you have ex players like Paul Parker, so clearly biased, printing more rubbish.

  17. This whole sorry saga has been caused by the inept FA.
Within days of the story starting the inept FA should have interviewed Terry and Ferdinand and had it sorted with in day.
Instead it has run as long as Coronation street. Causing havoc among not just English football but English sport in general. In every sport now the media will be looking for any racial slur.
The inept FA were wrong in not including Capello, regardless of what his contract says, in the discussions whether Terry should stay as England captain.
So as I don't get locked up for being racist what can I call someone from an Ethnic African background.
