Shanghai Shenhua are trying to sign Stoke City defender Matthew Upson, while talks continue about Didier Drogba joining his former Chelsea strike partner Nicolas Anelka at the Chinese club.

Shenhua official Ma Yue told Reuters on Tuesday that the Super League side were in talks with former England defender Upson but declined to give a timeline for the negotiations with the 32-year-old centre-back.

Shenhua have already turned heads in recent months after signing former France striker Anelka and appointing his compatriot Jean Tigana as coach.

The club have also been strongly linked with Ivory Coast striker Drogba and Ma again refused to rule out the signing.

Asked about both Drogba, 33, and Upson joining, Ma said: "There is nothing confirmed. We are still in the midst of discussions."

Drogba's contract with Chelsea expires at the end of June.

  2. Coolcabin,
    are you for real???????????????????????????????
Your side has been in Europe is comfortably mid table and attracting international players from all over the world.
    You are unhappy with this????????
Im a Wolves season ticket holder and would kill to be in your position.
Your a small team (as are Wolves) in a big league flying as high as you can, enjoy it, it wont last forever!!!!

  3. @ daplad..... Whilst I agree with the bulk of your comment, your last line did make me chuckle !! Man U ??? Really ?? They are the worst. The amount of players that have given their all for that club, and then when their form dips for a while, are cast into the depths of the squad, is unreal. Recent example.... Berbatov. He was hailed as the saviour when he joined, and for a decent amount of time, could do no wrong. Now he is a little older, and not as good as he was in his peak form, he hardly gets a look in. Berbatov is still a great striker, and a natural predator (goal hanger in old English !), but he simply doesn't fit into Man U's current agenda.... Football is now all about money. There are very few who play it for the love of the game. Sad, but true.

  5. more players will leave europe to make lots of money with clubs outside uefa control, so it wont be long till we get to see which players love to play and which love to get high pay, this new regulations are going to save the sport from greedy players.

I would go if I was Drogba. England is the most over-rated place to be and league to play in. Fans turn on you after one or two bad performances - forgetting whatever good you might have done in the past (especially if you're not white or British) and soon start writing you off.

It is hard to imagine anyone wanting to be loyalto an English club - except perhaps Man United.
