Six Nations - Flood sent back to Leicester
Toby Flood has been released to play for Leicester this weekend - but Lee Dickson is still part of England's plans for their Six Nations clash with Italy in Rome.
Flood made his comeback from knee ligament damage for the Tigers last Saturday and he spent the last two days training with the national team.
But interim coach England coach Stuart Lancaster has decided fly-half Flood needs another game under his belt before making his Test return and released him to play for Leicester against Exeter.
Charlie Hodgson was limited to non-contact work in training today as he recovers from a blow to the shoulder but he is set to retain his place at fly-half for the game at the Stadio Olimpico.
Dickson was initially expected to be sidelined for four weeks after fracturing a bone in his hand during his Test debut off the bench in England's 13-6 win against Scotland.
But the Northampton scrum-half, described as "Lazarus" by coach Andy Farrell, trained with the squad today and is one of three scrum-halves retained in the 24-man squad that will fly to Rome.
Joe Simpson has joined Ben Youngs and Dickson in the trimmed-down squad, replacing Gloucester wing Charlie Sharples as the only change to the squad that travelled to Edinburgh last weekend.
Lancaster will finalise his 22-man match-day squad to face Italy on Thursday morning, before the squad travel to Rome.
Sharples, who missed out on the final 22 last week, joins Flood as one of eight players released for Aviva Premiership action this weekend, along with Dave Attwood, Matt Banahan, Calum Clark, Karl Dickson, Lee Mears and Thomas Waldrom.

Not too late for Lancaster to re-consider - as a Tigers fan I am happy to see Flood sent back to Welford Road.
But as an equally obsessed England supporter it is bad news for the Italy game.
Agree Youngs has lost a bit of flair but is at his best when with Flood - take Flood and Youngs and I feel this will produce a good result.
If not, I for one will be nail biting from the kick off.
As for the Hodgson debate - he has been given numerous opportunities to prove himself, but feel that he fails each time. The try last week was good for the team, but charge downs are mainly "a piece of luck"
Flood is the best 10 Cipriani was never as good just a fly boy. Flood has a good head on him. Should always be in the England team if fit.
Hodgson is not up to International standard and even as a Tigers fan I have to admit Youngs is useless.
i am listening to all the new blood and everyone has a clean slate but i still have not heard anybody calling for cipriani to be gven another try. i know all about his previous try out and his off the field lifestyle, but im sure if he was presented with these are the rules you have to abide by he would relish the chance, and when england need an attacking platform there is no one better at present. also he should have learned a lot from his time in the southern hemisphere and be able to put it to good use not only when playing ,but also as an aid to the coaches when it comes to referees interpretation of the rules when southern hemisphere refs are in control
I fail to understand why Flood has been released as he is still the best attacking Fly hyalf we have and the only way we are going to make any attacking progree with the players we have is when we have Flood and Tuilagi back in the team. You cannot create a good attching situation from set plays when your fly half stands as far back as Hodgeson who is just not an international fly half. As for Ben Youngs, he had a poor match because he got no quick, clean ball from his forwards, but he is still the best scrum half in England. England have to learn how to clear rucks efficiently and they need a better no 8 than Dowson who was poor, will be interesting to see how Ben Morgan does and I would have had Waldron on the bench as an impact player. A few black marks for Lancaster I'm afraid as he already shows an unwillingness to be ruthless when better players are available.
The trouble England had last week against Scotland was they had to ply narrow in order to defend Hodgson. Our Wingers were brought into defence because they had vey little time to play wide. Streetle and Ashton were making far to many defencive tackles because of missede tackles in the middle. Lancaster seems to be taking England back to a defencive up the middle team of old. I hope he does not kill of the flair that we see so much of under Johnson. look at the 35-18 win over the Aussies in 2010 and last weeks game. England has taken a step backwards.Sending Flood back to leicester just compounds that. Dont have a go at Youngs too many times the people he had to offload to were too weak in defence. I think Lancaster is getting a bit too excited because we beat Scotland. We were lucky.
This could be Lancaster's first big mistake. Hodgeson was not that good against Scotland. He has an injured shoulder so will require even more protection because of his poor defenceive skills. It does not seem to have been done to protect Flood in anyway. Also if he takes Italy lightly, like France last year, we may well lose. You cant build a new team on failure, look at Scotland.
Scoring tries is a must in international rugby, and scotlands failure to do this last week was a gift for England. Italy next week will be a much tougher test, if england allow the italians to break through their three quarters as often as scotland did, they will be punished heavily. Also, england need to be more clinical in attack, quicker ball from the Half Backs and players running onto the ball at pace. All this will come I feel as this is a young new english side, who are only going to get better. Im a welsh fan through and through and although its nice to see the english team loose, english fans have got to be patient, rebuilding a squad takes time and results will come in time. Wales have gone through the rebuilding process over the past 4-5 years and only now seeing the results come. However by the next world cup you can be assured that the England team will be contenders. Also, I agree youngs has got to go for now i recon
Youngs not good enough for international level at the moment. Needs more game time with Leicester. Hodgson and Flood need quick ball for them to be effective.
Just find us a decent 9/10 partnership that produces quick ball ,can kick/handle well ,oh and a 10 that can tackle. That is what England have been missing for a long while .I'm afraid that Youngs and Hodgson are not them players .
I thought one of the good points coming out of the game was the lower penalty count now some of the old culprits have ‘retired’
I think there's a danger we underestimate how well the Scots played last weekend. They've shown themselves hard to beat- rmember how well they did against the ABs last time out- they just can't score.tries. Italy will be tough but more porous and will certainly score tries. Give the lads, especially Morgan, another go and I think we'll do well.
Simpson should be in for Youngs who should be on the bench.
Italy will be a real test for this young inexperienced England team. But if they can keep the penalty count down like they did last week while under pressure they should win, because they have much better half-backs.
Danger for England, they were given a gift by Scotland, Italy will be harder.
Youngs needs replacing and fast.
Surely we can find someone better than Youngs.
Under-estimating the Italians i think. Bad news for Exeter.
