McCormack: Redfearn could be next boss

Tue, 07 Feb 11:18:43 2012

Leeds striker Ross McCormack believes caretaker-manager Neil Redfearn could be handed the job on a permanent basis if results go his way.

Redfearn steered Leeds to a 3-0 win at Bristol City at the weekend after the sacking of Simon Grayson and his backroom staff the previous Wednesday.

Neil Warnock and Lee Clark were installed as early favourites to succeed Grayson, but while chairman Ken Bates this week considers a long list of applications, McCormack said academy coach Redfearn could be a serious contender.

"First and foremost I've got to give Simon and his team credit because they took the club out of League One and made us a force in this division," McCormack told the club's official website.

"We're still only a few points off the play-offs and he can keep his head high in terms of what he's done, but Redders has come in and given the players a lift. Everyone is focused on trying to get to the play-offs.

"If we go and win six in a row, you would think Neil will get the job, but we've got to take it one game at a time. We're striving to be the best we can be and trying to climb the league. If we can win a few in a row it'll give the chairman a headache in terms of giving Redders the job."

  1. Its not as Absurd as you think Graham, otherwise why havent we bought any decent players in the past few seasons to help us push toward promotion?
The facts are that the CVA we entered into meant that if we got promotion before 2013 Bates would have to pay millions extra to the creditors, but if we go up NEXT season the slate is wiped clear. Bates is a business man and the thought of having to pay out between £6-20M to people he doesnt give to hoots about will give him a few sleepless nights. He said at the time of the second takeover that he had "a five year plan" which looks like not getting into the premiership until 2013.
Im resigned to missing out on the playoffs this season, but i really hope we buy some players in the summer and have a real go of it next season. A club as big as Leeds needs to be in the premiership.

With an alledged yearly payout to Premier clubs of approx 20 to 30 million, its highly unlikely Ken Bates will consolidate in the championship and risk losing the gravy train, even if he does have to settle a few bills.
The Premiership is where every club wants to be. Leeds are no different, they are a Premiership club in every sense.
Absurd to suggest they are holding back

  3. I'm sure Bate's has had someone in mind for a long time, but I'm not convinced that whoever it is will be in place until the summer. He clearly doesn't want promotion this season because of the debts he'll have to pay. Therefor we can perhaps expect a big (well, bigger) push next season with a manager who he believes can turns us into an established Premiership team. Grayson was clearly a cheap and reliable option to get us out of League 1 and established in the Championship, and now we are pretty much safe from relegation and the transfer window has closed, he can get rid of him and complete the end of the 'consolidation' period. I'm sure Redfearn will get the job until the end of the season.
