Dortmund held to draw by Hertha

Fri 07 Mar, 11:15 PM

Marko Pantelic's second-half equaliser earned a 1-1 draw for Hertha Berlin against Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga on Friday night.Sebastian Kehl had given the hosts the lead on the stroke of half-time before Pantelic levelled five minutes into the second period. He was then red-carded, only for the punishment to be rescinded soon after.

Dortmund could have climbed four places with a win but a point keeps them 13th. Hertha move up a place to 10th courtesy of the away draw.

Visiting goalkeeper Jaroslav Drobny had already parried a header wide from Christian Worns, while Pantelic had tested Marc Ziegler at the other end, before Dortmund seized the initiative just before the half-time whistle.

Antonio Rukavina received the ball on the right just inside the opposition half and pinged it across the field to Delron Buckley, who was in acres of space.

His cross into the box was met with a downward header from Kehl which bounced over Drobny for the opening goal.

Whatever Hertha coach Lucien Favre told his players at half-time, it seemed to work as his team came out for the second half and grabbed an equaliser five minutes later.

Pantelic was not picked up as a low ball came into the box and he had ample time to control and fire low under Ziegler, who dived at his feet.

The match descended into mayhem three minutes later. Pantelic was chopped down inside the box and, when nothing was given, he angrily protested.

After some confusion, the referee mistakenly sent Pantelic off. This caused further outrage, with Hertha coach Lucien Favre sent to the stands for his protests. Then, realising his mistake, the referee changed his mind and allowed Pantelic to return to the field.

Back to 11-a-side, both teams had opportunities late in the game to steal the win. Rudi Skacel's volley was acrobatically kept out by Ziegler, before Nelson Valdez tamely shot into Drobny's arms when very well placed with six minutes left.
