Naismith: Gers command Ibrox fear

Fri 07 Mar, 04:15 PM

Steven Naismith believes Walter Smith's table-topping Rangers troops are slowly but surely restoring the fear factor at Ibrox this season. Two barren campaigns and a disastrous run of results under previous boss Paul Le Guen last season meant teams no longer feared the trip to Govan, a fact Naismith was well aware of from his own time at Kilmarnock.

However, the impact of Smith's return to the Ibrox helm last January is now being felt as Rangers continue to fight on four fronts for silverware this season.

Next up is the visit of Hibernian in Sunday's Scottish Cup replay, with both clubs battling for a place in the quarter-finals following a hard-fought goalless draw at the first time of asking.

Hibs are the only domestic team to taste success at Ibrox this season and Naismith reckons victory over the Edinburgh club this weekend will make the stadium an even more formidable venue for opponents in the future.

He said: "We are going out every week to get the win and we are trying to get teams to be a bit intimidated coming to Ibrox.

"Every game we win, I suppose, puts a bit more fear into the opponents."

Werder Bremen are the most recent team to experience defeat in Glasgow, slumping to a 2-0 reverse in Thursday night's UEFA Cup last-16 clash.

Naismith said: "It was a great result for the club and it puts a lot of confidence into the team.

"The games keep coming thick and fast and the more confidence we have the better. It will stand us in good stead for Sunday."

As well as the Scottish Cup and the UEFA Cup, Rangers face Dundee United in the CIS Insurance Cup final later this month, while sitting at the summit of the Scottish Premier League.

Naismith insisted: "We are in all four competitions and we want to win all four.

"The main priority will be the league but the other three trophies would be great for the club as well."

As for what to expect from Hibs, Naismith said: "We expect a normal game from them, where they get the ball down and like to play some good football and move the ball pretty well.

"We will need to deal with that threat from them and hopefully we can push on ourselves and score a few goals."

And he insists there is no doubt Steven Fletcher will be the main dangerman for Hibs, adding: "He is a great player and he has all the attributes so I'm sure he will go a long way in the game.

"He is having a great season. Since he has come into the Hibs first team, he has shown his quality and has scored a few more goals this season.

"He will be a major threat but I think we have got the players at the back with great experience that can deal with him."
