Bolton boss Gary Megson used some choice language in his criticism of Israeli official Eitan Tabrizi for not spotting goalkeeper Rui Patricio's handball outside the area. That and all the rest of the reaction on a mixed night for British clubs in Europe is right here.
Bolton Wanderers 1-1 Sporting Lisbon
Bolton Wanderers manager Gary Megson: "Whether it's a sending off is up to the referee, but the rules are if you handle outside the box you get sent-off - and he (Patricio) did well because he got both hands on it!
"As for the fourth official, he's a doughnut. He didn't know the rules. You are allowed to stand up and try and work on behalf of your football club. You don't have to sit down like a dummy all the time. It would have been better if they knew the rules on the pitch, though, rather than relating to chuffing dug-outs because the lad handled the ball with both hands outside the box. I don't normally come out and criticise, but I think he (the referee) fell for one or two things."
Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 PSV Eindhoven
Tottenham Hotspur manager Juande Ramos: "It's true, we had our best 11 players out there and were disappointed as PSV were better. They played better than us, they are very good - first in the Dutch league with a lost of points advantage, and have come from the Champions League.
"I didn't substitute (Gilberto) because he made a mistake. It was because he has been injured and he needed rhythm. Every footballer makes mistakes, what we have to do is support him and try to help him recover. We don't blame him for the defeat."
Fiorentina 2-0 Everton
Everton manager David Moyes: "We now have a big job to do. They are a good team and on tonight's performance we need to do much better. They played well throughout and in all departments. Early on they had a couple of shots against us as a warning. We should have defended their crosses and not given the midfield players the chance to get shots away. Some players, in fact the majority, didn't play to their potential. We've another game and hopefully we can do better."
Fiorentina manager Ceasre Prandelli: "Tonight we played with real desire and with the knowledge that we are a good side. They (Everton) are very organised and did well defensively. When the ball was in the middle of the park it was difficult to break them down so the idea was to shoot from outside the area. Many of our players are young and are unused to winning. They need to get used to the winning sensation."
Rangers 2-0 Werder Bremen
Rangers manager Walter Smith: "Early on Bremen had a lot of possession but scoring just before half time was a big factor for us and then scoring at the start of the second half put us in a great position. But it was also vital we didn't concede a goal at home and that could be important in the second leg."
