Guinness Prem - Toulon confirm Wilkinson chase

The president of French club Toulon has confirmed that he is trying to sign England star Jonny Wilkinson.

Mourad Boudjellal said he is in contact with Wilkinson's father Phil, but added that a transfer is unlikely due to the player's "European aspirations".

"We are in contact, as are Bayonne and Perpignan," Boudjellal said.

"But contrary to what has been said, we are not the favourites (to sign him) because Jonny Wilkinson has European aspirations that we cannot offer him."

Currently sitting 10th in the Top 14 table, Toulon cannot secure a place in next season's European Cup.

Boudjellal was also quick to quash rumours linking French international star Sebastien Chabal with a move to the club.

"For me, the case is closed," he said. "I'm not in contact with him anymore and he'll play for Racing Metro next season."

However, the second row forward, who currently plays for English side Sale, said this week that he would not reveal the identity of his next club until the end of the Six Nations Championship.

Boudjellal also revealed that two or three other players had already agreed deals with Toulon, but that their names would not be revealed until the club had guaranteed its top-flight status.

  3. I do think its time for Jonny to move on from­ Newcastle, but preferably not to France. It would be­ good to see him playing for a club that has genuine­ European cup chances, and with the players around him­ that will do there job of smashing the forwards that­ run at Jonny so that he is not committed to taking out­ players he should not really be having to tackel as a­ flyhalf. This in turn will let him get on wiht his game­ of running the backs and controling the game.
    Good luck­ Jonny where ever you decide to play and lets hope with­ no more injures.
