Ridsdale Not Thinking Of Europe

Mon 07 Apr, 12:09 PM

Peter Ridsdale insists he is not even contemplating the prospect of European football after Cardiff booked their place in the FA Cup final with victory over Barnsley.

Uefa have hinted that they could hand the Bluebirds a wildcard into the Uefa Cup if they lift the trophy, which they would not normally qualify for as they do not come under the jurisdiction of the English FA.

But the Cardiff chairman knows there is a long way to go before they can even consider playing in Europe, with Premier League Portsmouth their opponents in the FA Cup final on May 17th.

Ridsdale told Sky Sports News: "I've left it to Uefa to make the comments, it's purely hypothetical from our point of view as we've won nothing.

"All we've done is win the right to get to the cup final and play Portsmouth. They're a Premiership side and must be favourites.

"If and when we do win the FA Cup we'll sit down with Uefa and the FA, but at the moment we're just going to savour the FA Cup final and see what happens next."

And Ridsdale does not want Cardiff's cup adventure to detract from their bid to reach the Championship play-offs.

Dave Jones' side are currently in 12th place, five points adrift of sixth-placed Wolves with six games of the season remaining.

Ridsdale added: "We've got six games to go in the Championship and we're still hoping to get into that sixth spot. We've got some tough games, Ipswich away on Wednesday and Wolves away on 22nd April.

"But as Saturday proved when Bristol City lost at Southampton and Colchester beat Ipswich, in the Championship, anybody can beat anybody else.

"What we've got to do for the next six games is concentrate on getting as many points as possible, then we've got a two-week break before we're in the FA Cup final."

Ridsdale saluted the efforts of boss Jones, who was under severe pressure earlier in the season after a poor run, but is now a Ninian Park hero.

He said: "I'm so pleased for Dave, I'm pleased for the players, and particularly for our supporters. It was very, very special. I'm still pinching myself to believe that we're going to the FA Cup final.

"It's a vindication of Dave himself. He's a superb manager and I always said at the time if we didn't have Dave Jones, we would go and get Dave Jones, so we stuck with him."
