Khan Relishing Gomez Test

Wed 07 May, 08:09 AM

Amir Khan is determined to prove he is a cut above domestic level when he faces former British super-featherweight champion Michael Gomez at Birmingham's National Indoor Arena on June 21.

Khan's 18th professional test will come against the unpredictable Manchester man, who claimed a career-best win when he shattered the unbeaten record of Alex Arthur with a fifth-round knockout in 2003.

Gomez will be expected to liven up the pre-fight build-up and has vowed to drag Khan out of his "comfort zone", but the Bolton fighter is confident all the talk will mean nothing when they step into the ring.

"Gomez has never fought anybody as good as me and he's not as strong as me," Khan said.

"Domestically I'm past his level and I'm going to take him out and move on to the world-class arena.

"The build-up is going to be all part of the experience. He can talk up the fight but we'll see what happens when we get into the ring.

"The only thing he has on me is experience, but that's not going to matter."

Gomez gave then-British champion Carl Johanneson early problems during their fight in October last year before fading to defeat, and subsequently rebounded with a low-key win over former Khan victim Baz Carey.

Gomez said: "I save my best for the big occasion. I went to Scotland to fight Alex Arthur, who had a virtually identical record to Amir, and I blew him away in the fifth round. I'm going to do the same thing to Khan."

The fight will be Khan's first without trainer Oliver Harrison, who left the camp last month to make way on a temporary basis for Dean Powell.

"We've been working on a few new things and especially defensive things," Khan added.

"He's teaching me something different. Every coach brings something different. It's all about learning and this is my learning time."
