Landmark In Sight For Maraahel

Wed 07 May, 12:09 PM

It would be fitting if Maraahel could break the £1million prize-money barrier in Thursday's Grant Thornton Huxley Stakes at Chester, a race he has won for the past three years.

If successful, the £34,062 would comfortably see him pass the landmark, while the second-place purse of £12,912 would be enough to take Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum's seven-year-old into seven figures.

"He's been a fabulous servant. He's done a great job and won this race three times, but I think he'll have his work cut out tomorrow with Multidimensional in there," said the owner's racing manager, Angus Gold.

"He's in good form and obviously it would be great to see him do it again.

"He's £10,000 short of £1million in prize-money and it would be lovely to think he could get up to that.

"It would be pretty remarkable."

Maraahel's total earnings to date are £990,935 and about a third of which have come from his eight victories out of 30 starts.

The Mark Johnston-trained Majounes Song is the only filly in the six-strong field and her connections are under no illusions about the task she faces.

"Admittedly it's a tough assignment," said Gary Coffey, racing manager to owner Renata Jacobs.

"However, Mark is pleased with her preparation and she is a neat, nippy filly that should be suited by Chester."
