Tom Henning Ovrebo is unlikely to get any Christmas cards from the Stamford Bridge dressing room after his refereeing performance in Chelsea's Champions League semi-final second leg against Barcelona.
The Norwegian has not been without controversy in his career. Having made his major tournament debut at Euro 2008, he was sent home after two games when he admitted to wrongly disallowing a goal by Italy's Luca Toni against Romania.
Nor has he done English clubs any favours in the past. Ovrebo has refereed English clubs 12 times in European competition and has never once awarded them a penalty. In contrast, he has awarded three penalties against Premier League sides.
One of those penalties came in the first leg of the Standard Liege-Liverpool match in the third preliminary round of the Champions League this season, when Andrea Dossena was deemed to have handled inside the box.
Replays showed the incident actually happened outside the area. As it happened, Pepe Reina saved the spot-kick.
In this season's Champions League he has refereed four matches involving English sides - Standard v Liverpool, Celtic v Manchester United, Villarreal v Arsenal, Chelsea v Barcelona - all four of which have finished in draws.
In those games he awarded nine yellows cards to players from English clubs and just two to opposing players - plus Eric Abidal's red card in the semi-final.
The semi-final was the second Barcelona match that Ovrebo has officiated this season. In the other, Barcelona beat Lyon 5-2 and the French side had seven yellow cards and one red, compared to just one Barca booking.
In his defence, Ovrebo is very popular with players in his native Norway and has been voted referee of the season on five separate occasions.
Michael Ballack led the Chelsea chorus claiming the Blues should have had "four or five penalties", but how many clangers did Ovrebo actually make? We dissect the penalty shouts.
24th Minute - Alves on Malouda
Daniel Alves hauls down Florent Malouda on the edge of the box with the Frenchman falling inside the area. The referee awards a free-kick but no penalty.
Verdict: Replays suggest the foul was committed just inside the box, but even then it is not 100 per cent conclusive. It was perhaps the wrong decision but perhaps an excusable miss.
26th Minute - Abidal on Drogba
Eric Abidal appears to tug and trip Didier Drogba in the box but the referee waves the appeal away.
Verdict: Has Drogba ever been told the story of the boy who cried wolf? A stonewall penalty for sure but perhaps years of 'simulation' have finally caught up with the Ivorian striker. It is hard to believe him whenever he goes down.
57th Minute - Toure on Drogba
Drogba storms into the box before Yaya Toure slides in to stop him.
Verdict: Spot on referee! Drogba waved his hands in disgust at this one too but his countryman clearly won the ball.
82nd Minute - Handball Pique
Nicolas Anelka looks to flick the ball past Gerard Pique but it hits the former Manchester United man square on the hand.
Verdict: Probably not intentional but Pique was very lucky to get away with this one as his arm was outstretched. Most refs would have given it.
97th minute - Eto'o handball
Michael Ballack rockets a shot at goal and it seems to hit Samuel Eto'o around the shoulder area.
Verdict: We have seen them given but it is hard to see how Eto'o could have got out of the way - he was turning his back from the ball at the time as opposed to moving his arms towards it.
Chelsea can certainly feel aggrieved that AT LEAST one of those decisions did not go their way, but then again Abidal's red card looked harsh.
Most inexplicable of all though was how on earth did Ballack and Drogba manage to avoid red cards for their ludicrously over-the-top reactions?
All-in-all a bad night for Mr Ovrebo and it is fair to say he is unlikely to be awarded the final.
Do not be surprised if we see him again though. He is a psychologist by profession so should be able to take all the criticism in his stride. Plus he is already on the shortlist for the 2010 World Cup.

Isnt the most clear cut error the red card to Barcelona?
Didnt Chelsea play with an extra player for over 25mins?
ANd the Drogba foul in the 25th min could ahve gone either way but since it was Drogba, you err on the side of 'he's a known diving cheat and he's not getting away with it'.
The story of the Boy Who Cried Wolf was probably neevr read to him.
barca fans are on crack or they are the dumbest fans you can think of,they knew they cheated to win with refs help and handballs, buts thats normal with barca cuz they are the biggest loosers amd love to cheat and sooner or later sorry @#$% barca luck is going to run out,u can beat one EPL team with all the cheating but not two, barca is the most overrated piece of trash out there and thier fans are the biggest @#$%,get ready to get on your knees to a team thats better then you,f--k barca all thier players and fans
*@%$ ref. Drogba is right, he was a *&@$%*@ disgrace. i hope he gets banned from reffing major games again.
Chelsea should have won. They still have a chance at the FA cup, though
ok children.. bad luck.. another Champion's league semi final lost. It just goes to show money can't buy you everything, tough @#$% Abramovich, you can stuff your millions up your @#$%, it looks like your expensive plaything (called 'Chelsea FC') has failed again. Now you can go and sulk in your private Swiss country club instead of being a man and commiserating with your players (just like last year you pissed off instead of consoling your players after the penalties against Utd) You can't have everything you want in life, now grow up and tell your overpaid, prima donna louts Drogba, Terry and Ballack to grow up too. What poetic justice that Stevie Gerrard resisted Chelsea greed and stayed loyal to Pool...and his reward.. winning the Champions League !! Never mind, Chelsea, too bad.
i have to admit that this is a quite accurate analysis of all the situations, im not a chelsea nor a barça fan..drogba should really learn to stand on his feet and the referee should really get himself a pair of glasses.
all the situations weren't that clear and chelsea have to admit that there lack of achievrment in front of the goal cost them the final.
on the other hand one can believe that the red card against barça might have started all that. aknowledging his mistake by sending abidal off, the referee might have been torture by his own guilt and that's how i felt during the post-red-card period of the game.
all in all the referee's performance was bad and regarding both teams. but that's also part of the game which wasn't really the great game we expected to be honest. let's just hope it's the last time something like that happens..allowing videos wouldn't be a bad thing after all even if it's jsut for avoiding scene like drogba delivered after the game, but it might be one of his final chances to win this trophy specially if he was to leave stamford bridge at the end of the season (i doubt he would have a move to a bigger club, and even if he goes to real they don't have the squad to be a bigger team, not in the actual state of things). and i can't really blame him, nor ballack as a matter of fact, for his behaviour, being quite tempered and pationnate is a part of great players..sometimes they get more than they can take. and them not getting sent off was maybe also part of the guilt from the referee..who knows?
what about the penalty that was not given in barcelona...henry being pulled down. no chelsea complaints about that heh. anyway chelseas negative display in barcelona cost them a place in the final and they also lost all neutral fans for that totally defencive display.
2 ovrebo......the ""NOT HIGH QUALITY ENOUGH REF''''''.................are you blind.....or it is bcoz of your negotiation with Gardiola????????????how much?????? $500000??......$1000000??..........or it is an insurance of policy????????
2 ballack and drogba...........well done..that is the spirit of soccer.......always make a true decision during fouls........not like that @#$%ing son of a b@#ch ref.............
to Iniesta............@#$%ing scoring b@#ch..................and also 2 all players............messi.........alves...............et oe.....henry...valdes...........xavi.........puyol..... ..keita.........abidal..........sylvinho.......and the others...........dont get to excited as the @#$%ing devils are waiting 4 you..........if it is a rematch with Chelsea, dont put any hope 2 win bcoz cech will never allow any goal passing trough him........if it is not a rematch, go and destroy the power of the red devils.............sincerely......ANTI MAN UTD SOCIETY.........
what a poor ref......a blind ref.....pathetic..............@#$%ing b@#ch............
i would like to say that i neither support barca or chelsea but chelsea scored first, were denied 4 penalties which an independant ref reviewed on sky sports, his opinion was 2 correct decisions n 2 wrong decisions, it all sounds like a conspiracy against chelsea, but the ref then harshly sent off abidal, if it were a conspiracy n uefa wanted barca n the final wouldnt it make sense to keep all 11 barca players on the field, they had 10 men against 11 for over half an hour, chelsea should have scored a killer second goal n then they could defend n hit barca on the break, barca scored a wonderful equaliser n there is no way the ref had a hand in that goal, football is jus a game n u have to take the good with the bad, how many times have chelsea had contencious decisons that have got them out of jail in matches? chelsea will win the champions league 1 day but it will be on merit n not because they were given decisions by the ref that helps them get the result they need.
was f******king @#$%
What a superb refereeing display against the oppressors of decent football , Chelsea. Well done Ovrebo
I cant believe this writer is trying to find excuses for the way Ovrebo officiated. it was shotty. he sucked. I am a chelsea fan and I will admit that the red card was a bit harsh but Anelka was all alone. so it deserved something. i dont know about the red though. it was a clear accident. but again it was an 1v1 with the goalie. then some of the other calls pissed me off as well but i got over them. however when i saw pique's hand ball. i was cursing left and right with my father. HIS ARM WAS OUT STRETCHED WHICH MEANS ANY REF WOULD HAVE CALLED THAT!!! JUST LIKE THE WRITER SAID. BUT OVREBO IS SUCH A S### REF THAT HE SHOULD NOT DESERVE TO REF ANYMORE. F*** HIM!! BOTH OF THE HANDBALLS SHOULD HAVE BEEN CALLED. NOW THE FINAL IS GOING TO BE BORING. MANCHESTER UNITED IS GOING TO SPANK BARCELONA AND IT ISNT EVEN GOING TO BE CLOSE. IT IS OVER!! MAN UTD HAS WON. CONGRATS!!

with all the comments going on here i think people are still missing the fact that barca scored down to 10 men and chelsea had there 11. i think you need to question the fact that chelsea who had the advantage of a goal and 1 man more than barca still let in a goal in from them in the last minute. fine they had penalties that were not awarded, now lets assume chelsea didnt have penalties that was supposed to be awarded at all in the game and barca did score at the last minute with 10 men to 11, the question will be "what happened to chelseas' denfece? how did barca socre them with 1 man down?" am sure the ref didnt have anything to do with that goal.
Ovrebo is the real disgrace to football. NOT DROGBA. DROGBA was being natural and human.
OVREBO should get a shrink so his head can get examined.
Our minds are at play, watching to know what official comments UEFA would make about this match. A lack of comment would expose the hypocrisy in Micheal's lead UEFA. UEFA should come out openly to live above suspicions and critise what is bad as bad but take necessary actions where they ought to be mmade.
The world would look down on football, if a categorical statement is not made by UEFA, exonorating themselve in what looks really like a conspiracy. The match has been played physically and is gone for ever, however, the replay now is Morals VS. UEFA. which way would it go...
Well I read with disgust and lack of patience the way this writer cleary made excuses out of every fault. I might not be a chelsea fan but how long will it take UEFA to ensure that justice is not just as said, but as seen to be displayed. Making of escuses would not avail the obviouse robbery on the red night in the blue home. While I would strongly condem the reffing of the night-I urge Chelsea fans to be at peace as there are many more season, which one can go there way.
Finally, I won't go without adding that if FIFA allows a Ref. like Tom to participate in a world stage after the irritating display of lack of jugdment and conscience in Chelsea Vs. Barca, then there is a signal that the lack of judgment is that of the football bodies and not the Refs... Obviously, the world would watch critically and irritatingly any match his reffing. Kudos UEFA, long live the football bodies...
go stop pretending that u ar chelsea fans while u ar barca fans....y u talking about united?if u think barca better side then prove it...beat united....dont refer from last season performer...i know barca improve a lots...united improve as well...they already have 2 cup...that as a prove...last season they win 2 cup only...now they already have 2...and 2 still running...
