Champions League - Top 10 ref controversies

Eurosport - Thu, 07 May 13:58:00 2009

Ok Chelsea fans, we hear you, Tom Henning Ovrebo was awful and you were robbed etc, etc....

FOOTBALL 2006 World Cup Graham Poll Josip Simunic - 0

But there is no need to engage in hyperbole and call it "the worst refereeing performance of all time". Not when there is so much competition for that honour.

Try these examples out for size.

Watford v Reading - Championship 2008 - Referee: Stuart Attwell

Reading's Stephen Hunt whipped in a corner but it hit Watford's John Eustace on the thigh and went two yards wide for another corner - or so every one of the 14,761 fans in the ground thought. Not assistant referee Nigel Bannister, who somehow managed to convince referee Stuart Attwell that the ball had gone into the back of the net. "Probably the worst decision I've ever witnessed in football," said benefactor Hunt. The Watford players and fans were a little less choice with their words.

Croatia v Australia - World Cup 2006 - Referee: Graham Poll

Graham Poll made an absolute howler when he booked Josip Simunic three times and failed to spot Harry Kewell offside for one of Australia's goals in this World Cup group game. The Socceroos drew 2-2 and qualified for the next round but Sepp Blatter later commented that "had Australia lost the game and gone out of the World Cup, they would have had grounds to request a replay".

Manchester United v Tottenham - Premier League 2005 - Referee: Mark Clattenburg

Roy Carroll made a hash of a long-range effort from Pedro Mendes near the end of this Premier League game but amazingly got away with it. The ball dropped at least a yard over the line before Carroll gained control, but referee Mark Clattenburg and his officials somehow missed this fact and the match finished 0-0.

Portugal v England - Euro 2004 - Referee: Urs Meier

Sol Campbell's last minute 'winner' against the tournament hosts was ruled out by Swiss referee Urs Meier due to a 'foul' by John Terry on the Portugal goalkeeper. England lost on penalties and Meier was forced into hiding after receiving 16,000 items of hate mail. 'Urs hole' and 'Swiss banker' were amongst the highlight headlines in the British tabloids the next day.

South Korea v Italy and South Korea v Spain - World Cup 2002 - Referee: Byron Moreno (Italy match) and Gamal Al-Ghandour (Spain match).

Guus Hiddink has not always been the victim of bad refereeing performances. His South Korea side made it to the semi-finals of the 2002 World Cup with more than a little help from officials. In the second round, Italy were left fuming at Ecuadorian Byron Moreno as they had a goal disallowed, a penalty shout turned down, and Francesco Totti sent off for diving. In the quarters, Spain had two goals chalked off by Egyptian referee Gamal Al-Ghandour before losing on penalties.

Middlesbrough v Chesterfield - FA Cup 1997 - Referee: David Elleray

Third-tier Chesterfield were 2-1 up against Middlesbrough in their FA Cup semi-final and looked set for an unlikely place in the final when Jonathan Howard crashed a goal in off the underside of the bar to seemingly make it 3-1. However, referee David Elleray said the ball hadn't crossed the line and Middlesbrough came back and won the match on a replay.

Argentina v England - World Cup 1986 - Referee: Ali Bin Nasser

'Hand of God' - need we say any more? If Tunisia referee Ali Bin Nasser is granted an obituary in any of the English papers then it will be because of this and this alone.

France v Germany - World Cup 1982 - Referee: Charles Corver

Dutch referee Charles Corver inexplicabley awarded a goalkick when German keeper Harald Schumacher smashed into French defender Patrick Battiston during their World Cup semi-final in Spain. Battiston was sent to hospital in a coma while Schumacher helped Germany win the match on penalties.

Coventry v Crystal Palace - Division One 1980 - Referee: Derek Webb

Crystal Palace's Clive Allen fired home a perfect free kick into the top corner against Coventry at Highfield Road. The ball cannoned off the stanchion and back into play. Referee Derek Webb thought it had hit the crossbar and waved play on. Palace protested but to no avail. They went on to lose 3-1.

Brazil v Sweden - World Cup 1978 - Referee: Clive Thomas

Welsh referee Clive Thomas picked a strange time to blow for full-time in this World Cup game. With the score 1-1, Brazil sent a corner into the box and just as Zico put his head on the ball for an apparent winner Thomas decided to blow for time.

  1. im a chelsea fun but chelsea shud have scored more than 1 against barca coz 1 goal is not enough to win a game or seal the game if chelsea had scored in second half barca would had relax and not attack coz they willl think its over but i hope man u win im not sayin manu coz barca beat us well barca are a good team to be honest

  2. I am a Chelsea fan and as far as the game is concerned the strikers did not put in the effort and wrap up the game without worrying about the ref and his controversial decisions. Barca deserve to go to the final as they scored what they needed too and Chelsea knew that and ran that risk throughout the game. My one big comment though is that Chelsea and the players will get bans and fines and the ref will be put to needless worry because refs cant cope. Football is such a fast game now and if you want the best refs at these maches you need a bigger pool of refs and to get that they need help so lets have video evidence and take away the mistakes that blight our game.

  4. these howlers by refs are made sporadically. its not throughout the match. what mistakes ovrebo did was through the whole match. so that alone takes the cake for the worst referee ever. and how the hell did uefa even gave him a licence. granted the persecution he received from chelsea was emotional and shameful. but as a shrink, he DID brought hell upon himself. and why didnt his 2 assistants correct his mistakes? too shy? 1 or 2 mistakes was forgivable. but mistakes after mistakes? in my opinion, he got paidoff by 3 parties: chelsea, barca, and platini.

chelsea paid him: abidal got sent off.
barca paid him more: all legit penalty claims waved away.
platini paid and threatened him: be 'smart' abt your licence cos you are going to the world cup.

ok these are just fictional. but i strongly suggest that uefa start sanctioning refs & officials for poor and appalling decisions. if teams are responsible for their conduct on & off the field, why refs and his assistants get away with it? no fines/bans.. in that way, they'll start consulting every officials if they're in doubt or have reasons to doubt.

im no fan of either team. man utd all the way.. but for this match, i say

    football 0 officials 4.

  5. drogba is the personification of foul play and should be punished. the chelski fans feel wronged, but so did the fans of the other teams in the prem who have been @ the recieving end of the divers wrong decisions which are a blight on the english game. PUNISHMENT is long overdew.
lfc should be in the final with man u if he would have been carded for his acting.

  7. i am a fans for both chelsea and barcelona,so which team go through i would be happy.
however,i still have to say something bout the referee.maybe everyone is judging chelsea with their old record of diving, like drogba, malouda, anelka...yes they dived,so whats the point?
is it means u should have discrimination on their team even when they palying good? giving penalty only after considering their record?
what is this, this is not a mathematic question we answering here, this is sport, the referee should have act more better in this game.2 wrong never equal to a right!
maybe 4 claim of penalty would be harsh, but at least there is 1 really shold have given.and giving out red card for abidal is another bad decision, which is too harsh.
maybe u guys not supporting my thoughs here, but what i write here is based on this match referring, worst referee?nah if there is a rating , i would give him 3 out of 10.
maybe the fifa given the referee too much power, as he acting like a god on the field, and some matches could really be ruined by them.and i think even he knows he wrong bout the decisions he made on the field, he still wouldnt appologise, have u ever seen ur boss say sorry to the workers? hahaha
i am from malaysia, sorry bout my lousy english

  15. One i remember was the Italy - scotland qualifier at hampden for euro 2008. 1-1 was the score, if scotland scored, they would go through, but italy had possession. then a shot was taken and recoiled away after a save, alan hutton collected the ball but was charged and rugby tackled by one of the italian players. Hutton was sent straight to the ground and everyone thought freekick to scotland. But... the ref and linesman both thought it was a foul the other way. they gave a freekick to italy right in the middle of the space between the corner flag (right) and penalty box. it was then crossed in a lead to a goal... scotland out due to a spanish referee's very poor judgement...

How about the goal allowed for England to win the world cup while clearly the ball did not come close to the line? I still feel sorry for the dutch :-)

  17. look people if you were refs you'd see how hard it is so give them a brake we're all human and plus youyu make more mistakes in a game as a player than a ref does in that game so stop giving the refs abuse or else you'll lose them and lose the game what i think nobody wants

    From gally.gallagher, on Thu 7 May 9:54PM
  18. The graham poll 3 yellows the true story:

On his cards he has 1 side per team so he put the number of the player down on one side then accidentaly put it on the other as well. The 4th offical had noticed the mistake (so it is 1/2 his fault) but thought as poll is so senior he must be right and I must have made the mistake

    The offside:
The linesman should of kept his flag up and buzzed Poll as soon as Kewell touched the ball or after the goal went in

    From gally.gallagher, on Thu 7 May 9:50PM
  19. there was a game in argentina where the ball went out play and ball boy put it into the back of the net and it was allowed - classic

there was also the sol campbell goal disallowed in france 98 for nothing

collina performance in everton vs villareal where if everton had won it would of been 5 english teams in champions league more anti english from thatt t@ blatter.

  20. I am 65 years old, In all these years I have seen many..many..football games
many mistakes by the Refs, and unjustice decissions by many of them. But nothing
has matched the ignorance of the Ref. In the finals of the World Cup in England
in 1966. Was it ignorance, or a favor to the English Team...??? If We consider
that the Ref. was Scotish. Sorry....But it has hapenned many years ago, and yet
now and them, many fans still talk about the "DESASTROUS" Ref. against Portugal.
It was ..Pure and simple...One more player on the English Team , with a lot of
power to make the wrong decissions, allways in favor of England. Eusebio alone
was enough to beat de hell of the Inglish Team, but the Ref. was there to stop it.
So...You win some and loose some. That is the way it's go.
