Ok Chelsea fans, we hear you, Tom Henning Ovrebo was awful and you were robbed etc, etc....
But there is no need to engage in hyperbole and call it "the worst refereeing performance of all time". Not when there is so much competition for that honour.
Try these examples out for size.
Watford v Reading - Championship 2008 - Referee: Stuart Attwell
Reading's Stephen Hunt whipped in a corner but it hit Watford's John Eustace on the thigh and went two yards wide for another corner - or so every one of the 14,761 fans in the ground thought. Not assistant referee Nigel Bannister, who somehow managed to convince referee Stuart Attwell that the ball had gone into the back of the net. "Probably the worst decision I've ever witnessed in football," said benefactor Hunt. The Watford players and fans were a little less choice with their words.
Croatia v Australia - World Cup 2006 - Referee: Graham Poll
Graham Poll made an absolute howler when he booked Josip Simunic three times and failed to spot Harry Kewell offside for one of Australia's goals in this World Cup group game. The Socceroos drew 2-2 and qualified for the next round but Sepp Blatter later commented that "had Australia lost the game and gone out of the World Cup, they would have had grounds to request a replay".
Manchester United v Tottenham - Premier League 2005 - Referee: Mark Clattenburg
Roy Carroll made a hash of a long-range effort from Pedro Mendes near the end of this Premier League game but amazingly got away with it. The ball dropped at least a yard over the line before Carroll gained control, but referee Mark Clattenburg and his officials somehow missed this fact and the match finished 0-0.
Portugal v England - Euro 2004 - Referee: Urs Meier
Sol Campbell's last minute 'winner' against the tournament hosts was ruled out by Swiss referee Urs Meier due to a 'foul' by John Terry on the Portugal goalkeeper. England lost on penalties and Meier was forced into hiding after receiving 16,000 items of hate mail. 'Urs hole' and 'Swiss banker' were amongst the highlight headlines in the British tabloids the next day.
South Korea v Italy and South Korea v Spain - World Cup 2002 - Referee: Byron Moreno (Italy match) and Gamal Al-Ghandour (Spain match).
Guus Hiddink has not always been the victim of bad refereeing performances. His South Korea side made it to the semi-finals of the 2002 World Cup with more than a little help from officials. In the second round, Italy were left fuming at Ecuadorian Byron Moreno as they had a goal disallowed, a penalty shout turned down, and Francesco Totti sent off for diving. In the quarters, Spain had two goals chalked off by Egyptian referee Gamal Al-Ghandour before losing on penalties.
Middlesbrough v Chesterfield - FA Cup 1997 - Referee: David Elleray
Third-tier Chesterfield were 2-1 up against Middlesbrough in their FA Cup semi-final and looked set for an unlikely place in the final when Jonathan Howard crashed a goal in off the underside of the bar to seemingly make it 3-1. However, referee David Elleray said the ball hadn't crossed the line and Middlesbrough came back and won the match on a replay.
Argentina v England - World Cup 1986 - Referee: Ali Bin Nasser
'Hand of God' - need we say any more? If Tunisia referee Ali Bin Nasser is granted an obituary in any of the English papers then it will be because of this and this alone.
France v Germany - World Cup 1982 - Referee: Charles Corver
Dutch referee Charles Corver inexplicabley awarded a goalkick when German keeper Harald Schumacher smashed into French defender Patrick Battiston during their World Cup semi-final in Spain. Battiston was sent to hospital in a coma while Schumacher helped Germany win the match on penalties.
Coventry v Crystal Palace - Division One 1980 - Referee: Derek Webb
Crystal Palace's Clive Allen fired home a perfect free kick into the top corner against Coventry at Highfield Road. The ball cannoned off the stanchion and back into play. Referee Derek Webb thought it had hit the crossbar and waved play on. Palace protested but to no avail. They went on to lose 3-1.
Brazil v Sweden - World Cup 1978 - Referee: Clive Thomas
Welsh referee Clive Thomas picked a strange time to blow for full-time in this World Cup game. With the score 1-1, Brazil sent a corner into the box and just as Zico put his head on the ball for an apparent winner Thomas decided to blow for time.

i dnt support chelsea beither do i like them but its not the refs fault in my eyes its that french t wat platini who hates all english. this is a conspiracy no doubt in my mind he wuda done anything to stop another all english final so probably tapped up the ref.
We just need to wait a few years for the old farts like Blatter to die/retire and technology will fix all this @#$%. Games may take a bit longer to playout but at least decisions will be proper and people will stop blaming human error that will always be a factor in the game.
The difference is that in all these cases it was one mistake. This guy yesterday demonstrated a series of serious mitakes . All the incidences happened when he was in a short distance from the offence. HE IS A JOKE
# 37, before calling anybody idiot, you must learn to write, or at least find simpler words that your mind can handle. Whatever the 4th referee is for, it is not his job to overrule the linesmen AND the referee. The video replay was not, has not been adopted neither by FIFA nor by UEFA, yet it was used de facto to review Zidane's conduct. Had not he been sent off, it would have been a disgrace for whom? The Italians? The Spanish? As for the name calling, it always happens: when someone is short on arguments, he or she start calling names or using expletives. It makes him/her feel better while compensating for their inadequacy at the brain level.
in the 78/79 season READINGS first goal of the season at home to rochdale was a shot that went into the side netting!
went on to win the game and get promotion at end of season!
Carl D, you are an absolute i.d.i.o.t, without any doubts. Do you know anything about football? 4th man is there to coadiuvate the refree on particular topics. Zinedine Zidane had to be sent off; if he had not been sent off the pitch, that would have been a HUGE football disgrace! On the other, you must surely be a liver damaged french or a Domenech parent, which, trust me, is far from being a compliment.
If you want bad ref incidents how about this one Stockingford White Lion V Arley and the ref didn't turn up so there manager reffed. After about ten minutes he called over one of our players and said "i'm booking you whats your name?" our player said, "i aint telling you" and the ref said "i know what it is anyway it's c***." wrote it down and waved the imaginary card. Seven quid that cost us!
Oh and with the players on your team, who lie on the floor clutching their face, grimacing after minimal contact trying to get opposition players booked... I wouldn't accuse any other team of diving.
Every team in this world has divers, yet you're insistent on being a pot calling a kettle black.
Tim are you stupid?
If your hand is raised above your head, or placed away from your body.... and in the act of the ball making contact with it, it stops a goal bound strike or prevents a goalscoring opportunity, it is an offence.
-Hence the Pique incident is STONEWALL...
-The Eto'o incident is debatable as no-one can tell if it was on target.
-The Abidal tackle on Drogba was stonewall as well, and Abidal should've been sent off then and there... but Drogba's reputation played against him.
-The Alves tackle on Malouda is also a clear penalty, if he stopped play for the incident which left Malouda on the ground. The only excuse he has is if the initial foul was outside the box, in which case the freekick was STILL given in an incorrect position.
-The others are not even debatable penalties.
Referee are killing football. Referee anywhere whether europe, america, asia or africa, something need to be done before something tragic happen before solution are found. Let us have technology in football. We have it in rugby, baseball racing, lawn tennis, why is football different. Clubs must come together to force governing bodies to introduce technology.
I would add to that list the sending off of Zinedine Zidane in the final of the last World Cup. The referee did not see the incident nor was it reported by the linesmen. Someone who was not even in the game reported it and they checked(?????) the video. Who was that fourth "referee?" A certain Medina Cantalejo, who had awarded a penalty to Italy so they could advance. Anyone remembers why Juventus was relegated to a lower league? Barcelona has great players, but you see too many decisions in their favor. Football at that level has become like a ballet: everyone is in position and take a certain step a certain time, making a great show, but not what we would like to see. I trust neither the Italians nor the Spaniards at great matches time. They have perfected the art of Crooking.
oh and tim you p rick! if you can show me 1 video of any of the players you mentioned going down without any contact I'll give you 100 quid. I could show you plenty videos of ronaldo and gerrard going down without the any kind of contact, thats what a dive is.
god Id luv to punch you on the face

tim you are an actuall disgrace. you are just lying on purpose. you shouldnt be allowed to use a computer. fair enough people have opinions and utd n liverpool fans will say rubbish cause its chelsea but you are the worst person I have ever came across. I feel sorry for anyone that knows you, although I guess you have no friends.
lot of bad decisions in spurs utd games aint there
refereeing Tom Henning Ovrebo Should go to hill and kills itself is not a good refereeing and UAF shoud stop using him...
Drogba is to England what Pepe is to Spain: Disgraceful testimonies that affect the way children see this sport. Poor Henning. ˇBallack has the most atrocious bad breath! Poor Hiddink. His bad memory fails to remind him of a couple of legitimate goals scored be Spain in 2004 Korea-Japan World Cup that were called null and void by a referee, classifying his pupils in the same fashion we saw yesterday. You sow in 2004-you reap in 2009. Bye Bye Baby. Man U is number one by a longshot.
Three Card Poll was hilarious, but nothing more.
Hand of God is total stupidity, and Maradona should be banned from football because of that.
Schumacher's "effort" was the worst I've ever seen.... how the hell he CLATTERED into Battiston and ESCAPED with it?
But the worst one of all....? The Reading-Watford match. Guess the assistant referee was in dreamland!
(P.S: The "ghost goal" in Liverpool-Chelsea CL semifinal also deserves a mention in there, but I think it's excluded because it was never determined the ball crossed the line - still, I believe it didn't....)
homerBeckham what are you talking about... it is in the list shown in this article... actually the photo is that referee showing the Croatian player the third yellow
I think graham poll should be on top of the list because he booked the same player 3 times without giving him a red card during world cup 2006.......I think those who work at yahoo sports must be all stupid english who are related to sir oswald mosley..the founder of graet britain fascist.
Of course eurosport will claim to have blocked my ip for speaking the truth. The Cameroon-England match of 90' was a total disgrace to football and sports in general.
