Ok Chelsea fans, we hear you, Tom Henning Ovrebo was awful and you were robbed etc, etc....
But there is no need to engage in hyperbole and call it "the worst refereeing performance of all time". Not when there is so much competition for that honour.
Try these examples out for size.
Watford v Reading - Championship 2008 - Referee: Stuart Attwell
Reading's Stephen Hunt whipped in a corner but it hit Watford's John Eustace on the thigh and went two yards wide for another corner - or so every one of the 14,761 fans in the ground thought. Not assistant referee Nigel Bannister, who somehow managed to convince referee Stuart Attwell that the ball had gone into the back of the net. "Probably the worst decision I've ever witnessed in football," said benefactor Hunt. The Watford players and fans were a little less choice with their words.
Croatia v Australia - World Cup 2006 - Referee: Graham Poll
Graham Poll made an absolute howler when he booked Josip Simunic three times and failed to spot Harry Kewell offside for one of Australia's goals in this World Cup group game. The Socceroos drew 2-2 and qualified for the next round but Sepp Blatter later commented that "had Australia lost the game and gone out of the World Cup, they would have had grounds to request a replay".
Manchester United v Tottenham - Premier League 2005 - Referee: Mark Clattenburg
Roy Carroll made a hash of a long-range effort from Pedro Mendes near the end of this Premier League game but amazingly got away with it. The ball dropped at least a yard over the line before Carroll gained control, but referee Mark Clattenburg and his officials somehow missed this fact and the match finished 0-0.
Portugal v England - Euro 2004 - Referee: Urs Meier
Sol Campbell's last minute 'winner' against the tournament hosts was ruled out by Swiss referee Urs Meier due to a 'foul' by John Terry on the Portugal goalkeeper. England lost on penalties and Meier was forced into hiding after receiving 16,000 items of hate mail. 'Urs hole' and 'Swiss banker' were amongst the highlight headlines in the British tabloids the next day.
South Korea v Italy and South Korea v Spain - World Cup 2002 - Referee: Byron Moreno (Italy match) and Gamal Al-Ghandour (Spain match).
Guus Hiddink has not always been the victim of bad refereeing performances. His South Korea side made it to the semi-finals of the 2002 World Cup with more than a little help from officials. In the second round, Italy were left fuming at Ecuadorian Byron Moreno as they had a goal disallowed, a penalty shout turned down, and Francesco Totti sent off for diving. In the quarters, Spain had two goals chalked off by Egyptian referee Gamal Al-Ghandour before losing on penalties.
Middlesbrough v Chesterfield - FA Cup 1997 - Referee: David Elleray
Third-tier Chesterfield were 2-1 up against Middlesbrough in their FA Cup semi-final and looked set for an unlikely place in the final when Jonathan Howard crashed a goal in off the underside of the bar to seemingly make it 3-1. However, referee David Elleray said the ball hadn't crossed the line and Middlesbrough came back and won the match on a replay.
Argentina v England - World Cup 1986 - Referee: Ali Bin Nasser
'Hand of God' - need we say any more? If Tunisia referee Ali Bin Nasser is granted an obituary in any of the English papers then it will be because of this and this alone.
France v Germany - World Cup 1982 - Referee: Charles Corver
Dutch referee Charles Corver inexplicabley awarded a goalkick when German keeper Harald Schumacher smashed into French defender Patrick Battiston during their World Cup semi-final in Spain. Battiston was sent to hospital in a coma while Schumacher helped Germany win the match on penalties.
Coventry v Crystal Palace - Division One 1980 - Referee: Derek Webb
Crystal Palace's Clive Allen fired home a perfect free kick into the top corner against Coventry at Highfield Road. The ball cannoned off the stanchion and back into play. Referee Derek Webb thought it had hit the crossbar and waved play on. Palace protested but to no avail. They went on to lose 3-1.
Brazil v Sweden - World Cup 1978 - Referee: Clive Thomas
Welsh referee Clive Thomas picked a strange time to blow for full-time in this World Cup game. With the score 1-1, Brazil sent a corner into the box and just as Zico put his head on the ball for an apparent winner Thomas decided to blow for time.

UNCLE FESTER CANT GET AWAY WITH THIS. HE AND PLATINI MUST BE INVESTIGATED. PLATINI HAS ALWAYS HATED ENGLAND, THE LITTLE CHEATING SCUM.
surpisingly the worst decision was make by english referee when he booked croatian palyer 3 time during world cup 2006 not even make it into 10 worst referree decision...this yahoo sports must be control fascist members...must be relative of sir oswald mosley !!!!
And no one remembers Cameroon-England during world cup 1990 in Italy during the quarters. No one remembers how the Africans were brutally cheated out of a clear victory with controversial penalty awards to England. This man should be put in jail and left to rot there forever and ever.
What about England v Spain in the quarter finals of Euro 96... Spain had 2 goals disallowed for off side when they were by FAR NOT off side... as a consequence Spain lost in penalties...
And what with 1982 WC Spain-Yugoslavia.... Non existing penalty and 3 times taken, in order to Spain go in to the second round?
As a neutral with no ties to any teams in the competition, I felt that the penalty claims were very ambigious. Neither hand ball looked deliberate although have seen them given before. Drogba really has to look hard at himself as a professional player, his constant diving, whining and unsporting behaviour has come back to bite him in the bum i'm afraid. Which is a shame as he is great player. A Little less conversation and a little more action please. Also, if players are both wrestling for the ball why should the attacker be given the advantage over the defending player- as far as I could see one of the incidents really amounted to a bit of protracted wrestling with both players falling to the ground - penalty no - just a bit of old fashioned mans game football, If you give it out expect it back is my motto. Again sending off was wrong -more diving which really hurts the reputation of our game, Chelsea should have won the game anyway but for some poor finishing. The problem in defending the way Chelsea did is that very often you lose a break away goal. In any case Ballack really should have closed down the strike - see basic defending 101.
It seems that your thoughts are too old as most of your references are quite out of date or at a low level soccer. What we are talking about is a semi final and not group stages where many people are needed for refereeing. From Semi final it means that the referee for the game is one the best in the world or Europe and should not referee like Ovrebo. Probably there is inefficieny in the UEFA Technical Refereeing Committee if they make such decisions. I do not blame the referee much but UEFA that choose him. Becuase if you are requested to present one your best and the person presented fails, tyou have failed.
By far the worst decision I ever saw was during a Scottish Premier League game. Striker hit the ball into the net from distance with the keeper well beaten. Defender who thought it was a goal walked into the back of net, picked up the ball and handed it to the keeper. The referee then waved play on for a goal kick. absolutely shocking- does anyone remember the game - I think the ref was Les Mottram but not sure.
That's why we need video referee and can't wait to see this technology in place. If you can punish the players after the match, why can't we punish the referees. It's not fair
2 more controversies. The already mentioned Hurst's goal against Germany in 1966, and of course the quarter final match of the 1990 world cup England vs. Cameroon. Two penalties for England, both harsh, especially the first one which sent the game into overtime.
Bottom line... Refereeing mistakes ARE PART OF THE GAME. They are not on purpose. Especially at this level (world cups, CL, Euros...)
I don't recall someone making an accounting mistake or an administrative mistake or medical/dental mistake ever getting death threats.
P.S. To all the Chelsea fans: You should be mad at Didier Drogba. He missed a chance that no player from the 4th-5th tier of football league in every country is allowed to miss.
And you had the chance to be kings of Europe... Unfortunately the pitch in Moscow was slippery. Or was it just your captain's lack of concentration?
Duh. 1986 - Argentina vs. England. Maradona's notorious "Hand of God" goal against England. Still makes me ill to see the video. Horrid non-call.
how many more awful decisions will professional football have to witness before we introduce a fourth video ref? virtually every other sport now employs video refs, why should football be different?
France Germany 1982 world cup. That a ref makes a bad call is one thing. but when a player intentionally hurt another player and knocks him unconscious? how blind can you be? that was a disgrace. 1 would hope schumacher would have received some kind of punishment for it..
There was NO clear penalty in Barçelona- Chelsea game . Two dives apiece by Drogba and Anelka . An unitentional foul by Pique ( ball to hand NOT hand to ball) . The ball hit Eto'o under the armpit . No foul there either . Malouda's incident was borderline . It could have been a dive as well . Let's not forget that Chelsea have some of the biggest divers in football; Drogba, Joe Cole, Malouda ,Ballack !!
Henchoz handball v arsenal on line in fa cup final??????
1966 IT WAS A GOOD GOAL
It is well known in the industry that UEFA and FIFA both have a negative bias aimed at both the English national team and English Premier League clubs.
For that reason Tom Henning Ovrebo should win this competition. He was fundamentally anti-English... and anti-football when refereeing the game between Chelsea and Barcalona. His decisions reeked of UEFA and/or FIFA involvement. People were openly stating this before the game had even started.
Now I am no fan of Chelsea... but a wide ranging criminal investigation into corruption at both FIFA and UEFA should be launched and those responsible (if found guilty) brought to justice.
Alas, we all know that it will be brushed quietly under the carpet by those interested parties... and fines/bans placed on the outraged players.
all the 10 givwn decisions were horrible especially the hand of god.
but most of them were single mistakes made in the match which had devastating effects on the match but remain single mistakes.
ovrebo made upto 5 very very bad decisions in just one game.
so doesnt this count as the worst refereeing ever.
what hiddink said was perfect , it was the worst refereeing match of his career
good on the club backing Drogba,he only said what everyother true fan was thinking. THE REFEREE WAS INDEED DISGRACEFUL AND NOT UP TO A MATCH OF THIS QUALITY,BAD LUCK, CHELSEA,Corwot,Norwich
Speaking of refereeing descisions that affected outcomes of games and tournaments, You forgot to include Geoff Hurst's third goal in the 1966 final.
