Champions League - UEFA await Ovrebo report

Eurosport - Thu, 07 May 17:29:00 2009

Didier Drogba and Michael Ballack could both face disciplinary charges following the fiery Champions League clash with Barcelona but UEFA will wait for reports from the referee and match delegate before making a decision.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Champions League Chelsea-Barcelona Didier Drogba Tom Ovrebo - 0

There were angry scenes at the end of the game and both Drogba and Ballack could be charged for confronting Norwegian referee Tom Henning Ovrebo.

Chelsea could also be charged with failing to control their players after the match official was surrounded at the final whistle.

Barcelona went through to the final after drawing the match 1-1 but Chelsea claimed they should have had up to four penalties.

Ovrebo had to be escorted from the pitch by a platoon of stewards with Drogba apparently bent on a physical confrontation.

To compound his intimidating behaviour, the Ivory Coast international then turned to a television camera and screamed into it, describing the official as a "f*****g disgrace."

And the Blues may be in further hot water with UEFA after infuriated fans threw flags at the officials and the Barcelona bench at the final whistle.

A UEFA spokesman said: "We will see the report from the referee and match delegate before deciding whether to take any action or not."

Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink and skipper John Terry have both been scathing about the referee but UEFA will not be drawn into any discussion about his performance or suggestions that they did not want another all-English final.

The UEFA spokesman added: "We never comment on the performance of the referee."

Hiddink stopped short of backing up claims by Chelsea players that they had been conspired against by UEFA, who did not want a second successive all-English final.

"Yeah, well you can never prove this. It was said out of emotion.

"Three occasions they saw that no penalty was awarded, like for instance when (Florent) Malouda) was grabbed inside the box...that was a clear penalty."

  2. i am a liverpool suportter and it was a ref who had a bad game he should be thrown out and uefa should disband they did not want to english clubs in final thats why they paid ref and the draw was fixed to no way can you draw a team 5 times in a row if the forren teams carnt win with out uefa fixing the games then they should not be in it how much did the ref get platini you should go

  3. I think barca is highly overrated. They score millions of goals and everyone thinks they are that good. I think they are not. Over 2 legs, they only managed to score an unlucky goal. Its very funny. They are not that good.they must convince me by winning ManU clearly and not with a cruel and robbing ref. Then i can believe. I feel its another ManU trophy this time.

  4. How can UEFA say they are awaiting report from the ref ovrebo. Its funny cos we all know what his report will say..."ban drogba & ballack". They should expect report from a neutral point of view such as reserve refs or match officials or general viewers. Its like asking a robber to prep a report on same robbery he hatched. ITs indeed funny.

  5. U reading this..........forget the team u support or dont support. The fact is that when u see the truth, SAY IT OUT LOUD" It doesnt matter if it affects chelsea today and maybe others like arsenal, liverpool, man u etc maybe excited without reason. The fact remains that it may be anothers turn tomorrow. Who knows? My blame is to UEFA, they should stop killing the game. If such a Ref is not penalised to, i doubt the future of the game and it goes a long way to kill my interest in the game. Its such a SHAME. Pass this on....

  7. UEFA would do better to introduce video technology rather than punish any player for what amounts to reacting to an unbelievably poor refereeing performance. Chelsea and their player were punished by the result and I believe any further sanction is likley to insite a catasrrofic back lash. That referee could become a victim if any further action is taken. Please UEFA see sence if you introduce video you will prevent such an atrocity from happening again and may just save some knuckle head referees life. We can all stomach losing to a bad decission but not multiple bad decisions. Just for the record I am not a Chelsea fan but a fan of football. Any supporter would have been insensed by what happened to Chelsea if it had happened to their club. UEFA cannot put any credance on this incompetent referees repot without causing further trouble!!!

  8. Im a Liverpool fan and I really would like to see Chelsea lose, BUT NOT THAT WAY... I really feel bad because Chelsea was the better side. And three penalties to be ignored that was very very very harsh for anyone to take and I belive if Liverpool was in that place I would have gone crazy.. I think they should charge the ref as well as they want to Charge Drogba and Ballak.

    Hardluck Chelsea.

  11. Drogba has always fallen over at the slightest touch and constantly feigns injury. When he does get up after diving about he brandishes imaginary cards at the ref. There is a saying in life 'what goes around, come around' - he missed a sitter in open play,
did not get a penalty when he should have (for once) and he loses all dignity in defeat. Chelsea did enough to win but the reaility is they are out owing to a dreadful defensive mistake by Essien and a great finish by Iniesta.

IT SHOWS WE NEED CAMERAS FOR CRUCIAL AREAS AND DECISIONS AS THE COST OF BAD DECISIONS IS ENORMOUS AND SOUL DESTROYING FOR BOTH FANS AND TEAMS ALIKE..... COME ON UEFA.HEADS OUT OF THE SAND.. 15. I am directing this to Akay A , barca might have passed all the ball in that game, but Chelsea had better chances to score. I can remember the commentator saying that it was 65mins into the game and Peter cech has not made a single save. Chelsea played very well and deserved to win and people should start understanding that football has changed a lot and it is no longer how good a team passes the ball but how focused and sharp a team is to break a defense line and Chelsea proved that four times in that match and could have been three goals up. Barca never had a clear chance in that game, even with all their passes, I really dont mean to disrespect, but this is my opinion and I am nuetral

  16. Manchester United for life and It is a great joy for Manchester United fans. The Champion League belongs to the Manchester United and it is back to back title which is meant for the men not for the boys as Arsenal Thaught. Am happy that Barcelona has qualified for the Final but I want to bet all footbal lovers that Manchester United will surely have the title from the Barcelona.Christiano Ronaldo is still the World Best Player and He is really showing the World that He is a Classic player who can't be stop by any motion.Sir Alex is the still the best Coach which he has proved everybody beyond doubt that he is the best coach in the World.Have you seen a team that is like Manchester United?

  17. because im an englishwoman n still believe in a "fair fight"ie both sides havin equal rights n so forth i do agree it was due to some poor desicions on the part of the ref aswell as chelseas inability to score a 2nd goal(or an away goal in the previous match),that cost them their place in the final. I cant help but wonder if chelsea had held on for another minute or so would the ref be gettin all the abuse n hatered bein aimed at him?? Chelsea lost out for 2 reasons.....1 a poor ref,.....2 they couldnt get the ball in the back of the net more than once. IF they want to blame anybody then they should yes look at the ref in part, but also look at themselves n why they couldnt score again, then they can at least correct that mistake next season and possibly go on to win the cup then. N leave therefs punishment to the correct authorities.n encourage thier fans to do the same.

  20. If Didier is going to be punished for his "Outrageous" behaviour by UEFA, will they scrutinise the Referee (alleged) and the way he missed blatant penalty appeals even though he was in full view of a couple of them. People say "He could not have been bent coz he sent off a Barca player....How many times have we seen teams play harder with 10 men. When he got sent off I knew that something nasty was going to happen. For a neutral it was a fantastic piece of entertainment, For the ref it was a great big fat Money Earner (Not just wages I suspect!) For Barcalona, one hell of a struggle to get past a great team...and for Chelsea...Well we all know who really won the game dont we?
