Premier League - Woodgate: Spurs can crack top four

Eurosport - Thu, 07 May 13:51:00 2009

Tottenham defender Jonathan Woodgate is targeting Champions League qualification next year after finishing the current campaign with a flourish.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Premier League Hull-Tottenham Woodgate Keane - 0

Spurs are still in the hunt for a Europa League place this season and Woodgate wants to continue their recent good form after the summer, echoing the sentiments of boss Harry Redknapp.

"I want to finish as far as we can up the league," Woodgate said. "The aim is always to get in the top four and the Champions League."

He added: "We'll see how we do. It's going to be a better team next year, you can see how the team has changed under the manager we have now.

"Robbie (Keane) and Jermain (Defoe) have been good acquisitions for the squad, along with Wilson Palacios, who has been brilliant for us.

"It's taking shape in the training ground and we are starting to do it on a Saturday."

Spurs have been helped by Woodgate's partnership with Ledley King in defence.

They have conceded just nine goals in 18 home games and could beat their record of 11 during the 1919-20 season.

"The defence is unbelievable," said goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes on Spurs TV Online. "They play very well all the time, they help us so much for our clean sheets.

"It is the best defence I have played in, they understand the game so much and that is important for us."

  2. Baby steps, woody - but if we get a couple of decent players as back up in defence, an out n out left winger we are there or therabouts. Top 6 consistently would be fab ,looking always at the top four.

Silly season will be very interesting. Let's focus on finishing as high up as we can for now - next, Toffees stadium, COYS !!!

  4. "We want to finish as high as we can on the table" this guy has something new on his mind for the next season, but isn't that the reason every team plays to win? so they can move as high as they can on that table

  15. All these teams wanting to crack the top 4 should go and win the UEFA Cup(or Europa League now) before talking about going for the champions league.Aston Villa squandered a great opportunity to give themselves european experience by taking the UEFA cup lightly.

  19. Spurs are 9th. in the league for best defence and 8th. in the league for attack.
To get into the top four is a joke that must be going around White Hart Lane.
Spurs may well suit Harry Redknapp at the moment but just wait until things start going wrong.
