Ricky Sbragia has urged Sunderland's big-money signings to follow the example of bargain buy Danny Collins as they attempt to drag themselves out of relegation trouble.
The 28-year-old Welshman, who joined the Black Cats from Chester in October 2004 for just £140,000 under then manager Mick McCarthy, has repaid his fee many times over, in stark contrast to some of the club's more expensively-acquired arrivals.
This week, he was named the supporters' association's player of the year for the second successive season having earlier been rewarded by the club with a two-and-a-half-year contract extension.
Sbragia said: "Danny is really focused - that's why we gave him a contract, because he is everything you want.
"He loves the club, he sweats blood for it and what we get in training is what we get in games. He never, ever has, for me, a bad day in training. He gives his all - even if he is injured, he wants to come and train.
"Sometimes, we have to hold him back, to be honest with you. But that's what we need, we need people like him with a big heart who are quite prepared to die for the cause."

i said our last chance of getting points was against west brom and i cant see any reason to change my mind, but i still think we will stay up because of the @#$% below us. lets hope the scum and the smogs draw on monday, should be the end of both
If Sunderland and Hull City win this weekend, That will seal the fate of Newcastle and Boro before they have kicked a ball.
Lets live in hope both Sunderland and Hull city get a win.
0-1 sunderland win 1-0 hull win
I think we are in trouble. I cannot see us getting anymore points this season.
We are totally dependant on the other teams around us.
Our players haven't been able to focus on most games all season, so I cannot see that changing for the next 3 games !
Here here, Danny Collins is the only defender who has tried his best and not been found lacking , his so called big name team mates should be ashamed of themselves and stop coming out with the same lame excuses every week.
The team have to get a result at Bolton and this means going all out for a win and not playing a lone striker up front. The defence and Midfield must focus on their games and respective jobs they are given to do and do them well so that we can earn a result that will keep us safe.
If it goes all the way to the last game then relies on Goal difference we could be in trouble from all angles.
