Serbia defender Nemanja Vidic is likely to miss his side's World Cup qualifier against Faroe Islands after limping out of Saturday's 1-0 win over Austria.

Serbia tightened their grip on Group Seven of European qualifying with the win and lead with 15 points from six matches, five more than France who have a game in hand.

However, Vidic limped off with an ankle injury at halftime and coach Radomir Antic said he was likely to miss the trip to Torshavn for Wednesday's game.

Captain Dejan Stankovic and Bosko Jankovic are suspended for the game but Antic said he would not be bringing any cover into the squad.

"The bad news is that we will miss some regular starters on Wednesday but we have enough depth in the squad to get the job done against the Faroes," Antic said.

"We are not going to call up any replacements but Vidic's injury doesn't look good and we are not optimistic about him for Wednesday."

Left back Ivan Obradovic also sat out the Austria game with a hamstring injury, but Antic will welcome back suspended striker Nikola Zigic.

Nenad Milijas' early penalty earned Serbia the win and took them a step closer to the finals in South Africa next year.

  1. Sorry to lose some of our first choice players, but i think we can easily beat the Faroes without them.
