England thrashed Bangladesh by an innings and 80 runs inside three days at Old Trafford as the tourists were bowled out for just 123 after being asked to follow on.
Steven Finn claimed five for 42 and his fellow fast bowler James Anderson took three for 16 as Bangladesh capitulated after the entire morning session was lost to rain. Mahmudullah top scored with 38.
It meant Bangladesh lost all 20 wickets in consecutive sessions of play after they crashed from 126 without loss to 216 all out on Saturday evening. The win gave England a 2-0 series win.
Bangladesh, 203 runs behind on first innings, suffered the worst possible start when their talisman Tamim Iqbal was caught behind for two, fending off a short ball, from the second ball of the innings by Anderson.
His exit had a disheartening affect on the team and they were soon 39 for six as England took advantage of ideal bowling conditions in breezy, overcast weather. It was the opposite to the heat and sunshine of the previous day when Tamim scored his second hundred in successive tests.
Fellow opener Imrul Kayes departed next, for nine, in exactly the same manner that he had been dismissed the previous day, attempting to hook Finn but managing a top edge to Ajmal Shahzad at fine leg.
Junaid Siddique squirted a fuller length delivery from Anderson to Kevin Pietersen in the gully. The procession of wickets continued when Jaharul Islam fell to make it 21 for four.
He tried to cut a Finn short ball on off stump but could only offer a simple catch to Prior.
Anderson had former captain Ashraful caught at first slip by Jonathan Trott with a lifting delivery, for 14, while regular first slip and captain Andrew Strauss was off the field briefly.
That was 37 for five, before Shakib Al Hasan was bowled by Shahzad for one. Bangladesh were on course to record their lowest-ever test total at 39 for six but four byes took them past that record low of 62.
Mushfiqur Rahim was caught off a Finn leg-stump half-volley, clipped to mid-on. Mahmudullah's resistance ended when he edged an attempted hook off Finn, who had peppered him with short balls.
Mahmudullah, with a highest test score of 115 and showing more batting talent again here, may be entitled to ask why he was batting at number eight all series.
Finn, following his nine wickets in the Lord's Test, claimed his fifth wicket when Shafiul Islam edged to Strauss. The result was complete when Abdur Razzak was caught at deep midwicket off Graeme Swann.

Well done England, So the opposition were average to say the least, But they can only beat whats in front of them and they did it with style. After winning the 20-20 world cup and now this test series so emphatically blooding in new players along the way the future is looking very rosie indeed.
docozzy or is it dumdzzy, look at the ICC rankings then decide on your divisions.
I believe that there should be a two tier world Cricket Test Match League. The First/Premiership division should contain teams that have good infrastructure , competitiveness, and progress (ie developed nations). These teams would include England, Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and perhaps South Africa.
The Second division would contain Developing nations eg West Indies, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, which have no hope in competing with the developed nations because they don’t have the infrastructure or desire, despite a 2 Billion population between them.
Premiership teams should only play against second division teams for charity/good will, otherwise its just a waste of our time.
The troube is, none of us can comment on how well england played, because bangladesh are not rateable as consistant opposition to anybody.Bangladesh have no internal structure, no organisation, they have no real national championship, and no real leadership inside or outside the team.
There has been no real progress in the 10 years since being given test status.
In a time whem the purest form of the game is fighting for its life, it definately does not need test matches like this series.
Test status should be an honour that is earned by infrastructure , competitiveness, and progress.
It should not be cheapened and devalued, purely to increase on paper test playing nations, for the benefit of ICC coffers.
Bangladesh 20/20 and 50 over cricket? definately.
Test status? a big NO.
It might have been a very different game if Bangladesh had scored 4 more in the 1st innings (or England 4 less). On such tiny margins.....
dissapointed to watch Bangladesh capitulate so dramatically, their performances in Dhaka, Lords and the first 4 sessions at Old Trafford had given genuine hope that their development was progressing quicker than expected. Still, a very young side that wants to learn, I wish them every success in the future, its still just a matter of time, commitment and patience.
Respect to england, job well done ,
Alrite doggey, ows it goin ? dont
respect ur views on the great game
so be nice iff u dont comment on what
u dont understand ! top debut from shazza..
@Andrew
It is not England's will/desire to play Bangladesh, They are following ICC Calender as any other team. Being this ruthless in the last two sessions, I think England gained/added to their confidence, even it is against bangladesh
This batting performance again today has just proved my point which 6 people have thumbed down! Why are england playing such a poor team?? It is called a "TEST" match. Now where is the test in bangladesh? It isnt a test its a humiliation. Why bother playing them?
# Mirandola. No.11. As ever,the voice of sound,informed reason.
John,Spain.
How can anyone with a modicum of cricket interest be remotely interested in the outcome of these matches? We are playing a team with,at best, 4 decent players, the remainder would struggle to get into a Yorkshire League team.
The euphoria of Bell's knock, best surmised as the fact that this team is the only one that Bell scores well against consistently and he is known as the Bangla bully.
The match started at 11.00am Friday, I was in the garden by 11.15 and have chosen to remain there ever since.
Razeena - I seem to remember England beating a team called 'Australia' not so very long ago.
For God's sake its only Bangladesh! They are a great cricketing nation but they are also a slowly developing one. England need to start winning against the better teams like Australia, South Africa, India & Pakistan before they can be crowned the best.
Pietersen has always played a forcing game and taken the play to the bowler - that's how he bats, and while this natural style may have been encouraged by the amount of 'short-order' cricket he chooses to play, I doubt if he'd play any differently on a diet of 5-day matches exclusively. When it comes off, he looks like a world-beater; and when a bowler manages to get a ball to beat him, that means the bowler has sent down an excellent ball, and deserves compliments. I am at a loss to understand why certain (armchair) commentators seem unable to allow either a momentary lapse by a batsman or a very good ball by a bowler - have they never made a mistake?
Why are england playing this team of amateurs? Not exactly the test we need to improve for when ashes come around. Its a meaningless match. England will win it tomoz if todays bangladeshi battings is continued. Very pointless match. Play a decet side and lets test and improve our players instead of wasting time and effort. Any county side would give bangladesh a spanking. So why are england playing them?
Why is it that when someone offers an opinion that differs from your own there is always someone who will come on line and throw insults at that person? spare.metheshyte has a different opinion than nocohere and he explains why but not before he has called poor nocohere an idiot. Would you do that face to face?? Probably not so why do it just because you are on line ??
Regards the KP dismissal. I'm going to give credit to the bowler. It was a fine piece of bowling to a batsman coming at you. And as the saying goes 'he did him like a kipper'. That's the way it goes, bowlers are allowed to do that sometimes. No reflection on KP or his naturally aggressive style as far as I'm concerned.
Stop Slating KP! He's a brilliant player regardless of how he plays. He was whacking them all over the park today and unfortunately for him the Bangladeshi spinner realised how he was playing his shots and bamboozled him
Fair enough he played well and scored 64, but we should be sitting here talking about the 164 KP made today... As ever though a rush of blood, and he's off back to the hutch... 64 on this pitch, and against this bowling attack should've been converted into a *big-un* today...and KP knows it !!
Pietersen hardly threw his wicket away - he scored 64. If everyone scored 64 each innings we wouldn't lose often!
