Aprilia blames rules for absence

Thu, 07 Jun 13:48:00 2012

Italian motorcycle manufacturer Aprilia says MotoGP's recent rule changes have carried it in the wrong direction and made the championship less appealing to constructors.

Gigi Dall'Igna - Aprilia - 0

Aprilia has not had a prototype presence in MotoGP's premier class since 2004 despite dominating the 250cc category with Jorge Lorenzo in both 2006 and 2007.

While it now has an affiliation as an engine supplier to several CRT teams, Aprilia's main focus remains World Superbikes, to which it returned as a constructor in 2009 and in which it has since won 14 races, taking the constructors' crown in 2010.

Aprilia's technical director Luigi Dall'Igna says several wrong decisions taken by MotoGP have served to make superbikes comparatively more attractive.

"There is no stability with the regulations: they [MotoGP] change everything every year and that's bad," Dall'Igna told Gazzetta dello Sport.

"Also, we don't agree with the adoption of a standard ECU. We do our electronics in-house, so it's not a cost and its useful experience to improve our road bikes.

"I speak more as a fan than technician: it is MotoGP's wrong decisions that have made Superbikes more and more engaging."

  3. I agree with the MR Luigi, when rules extend to the point that both engineers and riders are disatisfied with the racing, and worst still when the public havent got a clue why a rider like danny pedorosa can be in front 3 whistl Hayden, Rossi and Spies a lagging behind. Many Years ago lightwieghts like Pederosa would never have made it past 250cc. It seems to me that new rules are being made to advantage the dissadvantaged and this is leading to bland racing. From the current creme of the crop, Rossi is the only racer thats want to race and win, whilst Lorenzo and Stoner just want to win. This is not the case in the topsy turvey world of World Superbike, where entertainement is the norm, especially this year.

  7. Hi M I YamHon GP??? as I see it there are the same amount of Ducatis as Yamaha??ooo Gilera in 250cc was a there own most of it but with money from Piaggi group I would not call them small,. Skoda and Seat on the other hand are basicly VW with different styling, 10 years ago SEAT and SKODA use to be a 3 year old VW but now for example SEAT Octavia was a couple of years ago the first to get the new bottom end of the car, followed by Golf and then SKODA Octavia , because that was the one that was up for a upgrade, so yes they are all made with the same product, and rebadged Chevy Cruze, Captiva, Spark and Aveo are all rebadged Daiwoo in Korea and Holden in Oz because they are all own by GM, Audi A6 RS Use a lambo v10 with SC so the parts all go around, thats how they make big money But you knew this already:) Cheers Claes

  8. @Michael F and Skoda, Seat, lamborghini..etc are owned by VW group. Does that make them a e-badged VW??? think about it lad !!

    From M, on Thu 7 Jun 21:39
  9. Um M, Gilera is owned by the Piaggio group, the same company that owns Aprilia, the Gilera that Simoncelli won the 250 title on was nothing more than a rebadged Aprilia RSV250. Do you know anything at all about the inner workings of this sport?

  10. @ W R Of course european manufacturers can do it, but they cannot afford to spend huge amount of money like Honda and Yamaha.I think the introduction of CRT is the only way we can see other manufacturers in GP series. They also put a cap on teams annual expenditure and relax in-season testing.

    From M, on Thu 7 Jun 20:21
  11. @C lol have you heard or a manufacturer called Gilera??? Gilera is even smaller than Aprilia and they won 250cc title above all those big boys. Ferrari and McLaren are small manufactuers compare to Honda, Toyota and Mercedes, if it's like what you said, then they must go race in GT series to sell their road cars!! What you said was the dumbest thing I've ever heard !!

  12. I was thinking that the change to 1000cc would encourage a merging of the 2 series maybe in a year or two. However, given the closeness and excitement of racing in moto2 and moto3, it would not surprise me to see motogp monicker being dropped in favour of moto1 ( funny how they kept it vacant - as in premier league and division 1 you would expect motogp and moto1... but I digress) and honda or yamaha providing a "standard" 1000cc engine for a multitude of chassis prototypes as per moto2 and moto3. In which case there is no incentive for the european manufacturers to participate in anything other than wsbk, which de facto becomes the premier motorcycle racing class.

    From W R, on Thu 7 Jun 18:45
  13. They should change the name of the series to JapaGP or HonYamGP.

    From M, on Thu 7 Jun 18:13
  14. Not a big enough company- they have to stay in WSB to sell road bikes- since you can go to a dealer and buy the same basic bike Max rides- Not!!

    From C, on Thu 7 Jun 16:20
  15. I do wish that the major suppliers of the crt class would make full on prototypes to take on the - because its not like BMW is a small operation is it they've gone into F1 ' so why car'nt they do moto gp also ...BMW and APRILLIA would be very supprised at the amount of fans wolud support them in thier droves ,and all because everybody loves the David v's Golliath Story .
