Colchester boss Geraint Williams has smashed the club's transfer record for Cheltenham striker Steven Gillespie for a fee exceeding £400,000.Gillespie handed in a transfer request at Whaddon Road last week after the Robins rejected a £400,000 bid from an unnamed League One club.

The 24-year-old has now joined the Us, but the exact length of Gillespie's deal has yet to be confirmed.

Williams beat the likes of Scunthorpe to lure the former Liverpool trainee to Layer Road.

Gillespie's departure more than doubles the previous outbound transfer record which was set when striker Kayode Odejayi joined Championship side Barnsley for £200,000. He made over 50 appearances in total for Cheltenham, scoring 28 goals in total.
