Premier League - Transfer Talk: Bargain Bentley

Eurosport - Mon, 07 Jul 07:58:00 2008

Juande Ramos is preparing to spend £15million of Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy's crisp notes for David Bentley, and may even deploy the "next David Beckham" as a left-sided midfielder.

FOOTBALL 2007-2008 Premier League Blackburn Rovers David Bentley - 0

Blackburn's Bentley-shaped hole will be filled by James McFadden. Paul Ince is offering £5.5million to Birmingham City, and seeing as the Scottish international has refused to play in the Championship a move looks likely.

Stoke City, meanwhile, are closing in on the man who put Calamity James back in an England jersey - Scott Carson. Tony Pulis fancies a loan deal, but cash-hungry Liverpool would prefer to sell.

Don't be surprised if the Reds stick a price-tag on Carson in the region of £100million, following their recent valuation of bench-warmer Peter Crouch.

Down in South West London, Andriy Shevchenko is putting together a showreel of his best Chelsea moments and heading to Barcelona to join Thierry Henry.

The 30-second tape will presumably convince the Catalans that one past-it striker is simply not sufficient to keep the Nou Camp in goals.

Chelski are also keen to offload Branislav Ivanovic to Juventus. The £9million man has failed to make a single appearance for the Blues, but according to insiders his Serbian cooking has proved invaluable to morale.

On to the Taliban's team of choice, Newcastle United, and their plans to sign Ciljan Skjelbred from Rosenborg.

The 21-year-old midfielder is apparently a lifelong member of the Toon Army, and allegedly has framed posters of Ant and Dec, Alan Shearer and Bobby Robson blu-tacked to his bedroom wall; not to mention a deluxe Byker Grove boxset in permanent rotation.

Kevin Keegan will have to fight Tottenham, Portsmouth and Arsenal for his signature however, and a pricetag of £4million seems likely. Don't be surprised if Liverpool come in with an offer in the region of £10,000.

West Ham defender Lucas Neill is wanted by Galatasaray, and the Hammers may also have to make do without Danny Gabbidon thanks to the amorous attentions of those outrageous flirts Stoke.

Finally, an obligatory mention for the frankly riveting Cristiano Ronaldo saga. Whether a decision will be made before Guns and Roses release their long-awaited Chinese Democracy album is yet to be seen, but the tabloids seem to be leaning towards the "Ron to stay" at Manchester United line today.

Joining him at the Theatre of Dreams (just down the road from the megastore of corporate gluttony) may well be Ajax striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who claims United have been nodding and winking in his direction.

  3. coronation street and brothel talk, mixed in with some grammar debate ~ is this the football page? it's funny how liverpool keeps getting criticized for pricing their own players too high and trying to buy others for too low? would you prefer your club did the opposite? in fact, isn't that what a club is SUPPOSED to do? if not, newcastle is the finest club in england!

  6. Absolutely, Phil... the standard of written English sinks deeper by the minute. Some will accuse this view as being reactionary, pointing out the very obvious fact that not every comment in English is made by a native speaker, yet it is also very obvious when this is the case and allowances can be made. Indeed, in my experience, speakers of English as a foreign or second language are generally more careful and precise in their usage. I have worked in bordellos from Lincoln to Tokyo, and from Mexico City to Shanghai and I can definitely say that in all locations, my colleagues' writing skills were every bit as good as their oral ones.
As far as the above article is concerned, my only comment is that Ant and Dec really should have been drowned as pups. I like the Shevchenko dig though! Death to Chelsea... Lincoln City rule, and so on and so forth... blah blah blah...

  7. Coronation Street has reasonably well structured and thought out dialogue. This site, on the other hand, seems to have been populated by people who learned their English language skills in a Hong Kong bordello. It really should be made a rule that if you can't make any sense in English then don't attempt a comment. To suggest that 90% of the posted comments are utter drivel would be an insult to those who attempt to write drivel. If there were a comments league most of the comments that I have attempted to decipher wouldn't make it to the Unibond Division 2. Forget about football lets make the English language a winner.

  10. Whatewver the article says, i must admit something; Being a football player myself, I have to go with the great George best's comments: David beckham can only hit the ball. He cannot head it, run with it or control it. So, if people say that it is the media that is influencing the way we value players, then I must agree. Ronaldo is a good player but everyone must agree that his technique on the ball is not as impressive as the previous season. Last season he scored many goals, so everyone is saying he is the best in the world. But you cannot have a price tag of over £50m when you think of Zidane who was and is one of the best ever, costing around £40m! This is stupid. Same goes for Rooney. Everybody saw how bad he played in the last world cup. Next is carrick. How can u pay that much for such a player. Now, manu fans may get angry, so I will include other names: crouch and Carson are over-valued by Benitez. Celski are paying way too much for players who do not deserve it (most of them)! Arsenal are the only team I cant comment on as most of the players were very young when they joined!
So, in short, players in England are over-valued because people are influenced by the media. I is only the media that make and destroy stars, and people believe this stupidity

  13. jordan martin your an absolute prat and know nothing about football. Please dont comment if you only have nonsence to speak.Liverpool 6th??? We are under no illusions that a 1st place finish is availabe next year, this decade has gone to united and will stay with united, we will win the year after. This year we are going for 3rd as we still lack the depth of squad that united and chelsea have. 2010 will be the season for the reds guarenteed. WE are a buying club which does put us ahead of the selling club arsenal have become 3rd spot will be ours mb fa cup or Euros aswell, then one or two first team additions will give us a rivaling squad.

  16. Ok, here's the deal, Chelsea are RUBBISH, they are getting rid of the only person who can score in their team, Drogba, Anelka can't score to save his life, Lampard can only score penalties, and shevchenko can't tie his laces! Arsenal have lost three of their four best players, Helb will go, Flamani is away, and adebayor wants money that isn't avaiable. Liverpool are dreaming if they think they will get 15 Mill for donkey crouch, he couldn't hit a barn door if he sat on the pad lock, and carson one of the worst goal keepers in the Premier League since Andy Gorum! Finally to Manchester United, Now Being a United fan you might think i'd be biased, but no, if Ronnie wants to go, let him, anything over 50 Mill is too much to turn down, bring in Huntelaar to bag few, and Benzema if you're gready! Honeslty, I don't think United will win the league this season, but, you never know, we might just nick it! What I do know is, Liverpool wont finish fourth or fifth this season, they will be sixth, while Spurs will get fourth and possibley Newcastle or Manchester City will get fifth! Bring on the new season, I can't wait! Newcastle our first game, Manchester United 4-0 Newcastle, Sorted!
