The South African Rugby Union is to be charged with misconduct for allowing its players and coach to wear white "justice" armbands in Saturday's Test against the British and Irish Lions in Johannesburg.
The Springbok players and management, including coach Peter de Villiers, wore the bands in protest at what they considered an unfair two-week suspension given to lock Bakkies Botha for charging Lions prop Adam Jones in the second Test in Pretoria.
Welshman Jones dislocated his shoulder and could be out of action for up to six months.
South Africa appealed against Botha's ban but the suspension was upheld and he missed the third test, which the Lions won 28-9 having lost the first two matches of the series.
"The International Rugby Board takes the view that such an act demonstrates a clear disregard of the disciplinary process and does so in a manner which brings, or has the potential to bring, the game into disrepute," the sport's governing body said in a statement.
"The IRB has notified the South Africa Rugby Union that it intends to begin the disciplinary proceedings. The matter will now be referred to the independent Judicial Panel Chairman who will appoint a judicial officer or committee."

this was disrespectful to the game , and supporters on the world stage. whoever sanctioned this should be charged with bringing the game into disrepute.
it makes the players look dishonest and willing to seriously damage by assaulting others without thought. they are not above the laws of the game and a tough punishment should follow.
Go on cartman go for it my son .
i'm glad
Gaz W: I pretty much agree with everything you have wrote.
I thought the Lions were outstanding. I totally agree with you having watched the Bulls dominate the Super 14, I expected a rout. What we got was something much better- a nailbiting and highly entertaininbg series.
For me, the Boks very disappointing and never quite got out of second gear. I think the bulk of responsibility for the Boks underperformance lies firmly and squarely on the (offset) shoulders of "Helium Piet" whose very poor management and people skills were badly exposed. The man is an embarrassment and WAY out of his depth, and it was only SA's superbly talented and committed players and phenomenal captaincy that saved the Boks. John Smit is like a good red wine: he just gets better and better with age. Brussow is a wonderful talent, and I agree that it was his substitution for Russouw that turned the 2nd test match around.
Some of the Lions supporters on this blog have claimed that they played against 16 men most of the series - well in that case, so did the Boks, and perhaps the Lions best player of the series may well have been PDV.
Of course I am thrilled the Boks pipped the Lions, but unfortunately this series win means that PDV has cemented his place at the Bok helm for some time to come. I am very concerned about the TriN based on their current form.
True Bok supporters also happen to be true rugby supporters. The Lions and Geech are great competitors, and have more than earned our respect.
Good on the Lions, and thanks for a wonderful series!
(cartman, stop faffing about and give the girl your phone number).
I think that if the roles had been reversed and a Bok was gouged, there would have been hell to pay!! The SA coach needs a wake up call on "intentional" acts and those that happen in the course of play. As an ex rugby player from way back, I have a pretty good idea of what goes on during a game.
Burger is a fantastic player and worth three men on the field, all he needs is to direct his energy into the game and not do silly things. He is already targeted by refs and should just get on and play the great game he is so capable of.
The Lions played a good game in the last match. They went in hard and fast and it was a great game to watch. SA played well but I think were a bit punch drunk after the first few minutes due to the ferocity of the Lions, which had not been the case in the previous games. SA defended really well, but the scrums could do with a bit of work. Putting your hand down to support yourself as a prop is against the law, and this happened a number of times with the SA props.
All in all I look forward to more confrontation of the North vs. the South!!!
As the lions go to sleep again for another 4 years we are all left to ponder what was & what could have been.
I'm sure that there are more questions being asked of the springboks than the lions?, why didn't the best team in world rugby not perform as well as they can??, i've watched them in the tri-nations, the world cup & they seemed a more fluid team then. The players are all the same(just about) so is the real question the management??, De villiars in my opinion is a joke & is ruining all the great work jake White did, is it a political move to have a guy that really seems to lack in the knowledge of the game & certainly the media side of the game(it's a must now)??, Having watched the Bulls play outstanding rugby i did fear that the lions would be torn to bits but we all saw what happened & for the odd blip the 3rd test could & should have been a decider.. would like to know from bok fans what they think please.
As for botha, he shouldn't have been banned, Burger needs to go away & have a bloody good think, seems like a great guy off the field & i've enjoyed watching him over the last 4/5 years,so what went wrong??.. John Smitt is a fantastic captain & leader of men, the young open-side that came in is a fantastic find & burger will be hard pressed if he continues to show the form he did, in my opinion he turned the 2nd test when he came on(i will be talking to his mother about this!!!)
As for my beloved lions, they played with heart, spirit & the real ethos that the lions are, i just feel another 2 weeks together in SA & maybe a few less high intensity games during the year & we can give any of the nations we play against a real run for their money
Well done the boks, the score is 2-1, but well done the lions for making every bok just a wee bit uncomfortable, but that's the great theatre that this series brought to our homes.. lets leave politices & the name calling
