Premier League - Gosling walks out on Everton

Eurosport - Wed, 07 Jul 11:54:00 2010

Everton have lost out on up to £4 million for England U21 star Dan Gosling after an administrative error allowed the midfielder to walk away for nothing.

- 0

Gosling stunned Everton by walking out of the Merseyside club as a free agent despite a £15,000 a week contract offer.

And his decision was a double blow for the Merseyside club: an administrative error saw them fail to make Gosling an official written offer, meaning that they will miss out on a tribunal fee should he move to a rival Premier League club.

The 20-year-old, signed from Plymouth Argyle in 2008, rejected the two-year deal and the Premier League has ruled that he is free to leave the club for nothing after the error.

Toffees chairman Bill Kenwright made a verbal offer to Gosling without putting anything in writing, and the highly-rated midfielder indicated that he was likely to sign.

But, after newly-promoted Newcastle United reportedly expressed an interest in his services, Gosling has opted to leave Goodison Park as a free agent, despite facing the first four months on the sidelines with a knee injury.

Everton will lose out on up to £4 million likely compensation because of the failure to formally offer Gosling a new deal.

Officials at the club, who finished eighth last season, insist they had made a gentleman's agreement with Gosling, as had been the case in the past with Wayne Rooney and Jack Rodwell - but a Premier League investigation ruled in his favour.

Gosling, who can also play in defence, is thought to have deliberately stalled contract talks because he wants first team football in his preferred central midfield position.

  2. I'm affraid I would not pay to watch any football team with Craig Bellamy
Our (Everton's) league position was not bad after the start we had
Let us leave it at that for now I'm quite confident Everton can finish above Nwcastle in the table

  3. How many times have Newcastle won the League?
Manchester City have won it twice
Everton have won the League more than City and Newcastle added together
Our form last season wasn't bad after a bad start and the Lescott affair
Newcastle will soon be winning trophies again THE CHAMPIONSHIP
Newcastle have won no major trophies since 1968 the old INTER CITY FAIRS CUP
I accept Newcastle have passionate supporters but Everton too have 30,000 season ticket holders

  4. They didn't beat them in the league table though, did they? Nor did they come close to doing so. Unlike Spurs.....

  5. Everton beat Manchester City home and away last season
The biggest game City have played in 30 years was the League 1 (as is) Play Off Final Vs Gillingham. The old Third Division.
In the 60s and 70s Everton had the backing of the Moores (Littlewoods) family and before too long the City owner will decide.....

  6. It is worth remembering when Alan Shearer was young Southampton and then Blackburn Rovers were doing well in the PL while Newcastle were in a previous one of their dark phases (that one being grimmer, indeed). Peter Bearsley left at a time he was past his prime, and continued to enjoy a career after that with weaker clubs.

It is worth remembering Man City too - 10yrs ago, they were in the Chamopionship and even went as low as League 1 in the late 90's. Now look where they're finishing. It might be down to lucrative spending, but why did they attract that over Everton? Seems to be a gravy train Everton missed there too.....

  7. When were Everton bigger than Newcastle?! How many top¬ 4 finishes have Everton had since the formation of the¬ Premier League? Which of the two has a bigger ground? ¬ Which of the two has more supporters? Everton might¬ not have been relegated for over 50 years, but¬ they've also achieved sweet FA in that time, and¬ not even come close to achieving anything in at least¬ the last 20 years. Not a lot of point in hanging round¬ forever to be an also-ran really. Obviously Everton¬ players think the same....

At the top of this comment is something you said earlier
Cards on the table we sold Wayne Rooney because at the time we needed the money.
Let us look for a moment at some of the players Newcastle sold Chris Waddle,
Peter Beardsley and Paul Gascoigne all top quality and Newcastle did well to develop these players but they all left.
Allan Shearer a personal favourite of me (and most football fans I am sure) could have joined Newcastle for nothing as a youngster but in the end cost the club
    15 million pound.
True we have not won the trophies other clubs have but our record is not bad and in the 1980s when we won two league titles and played three consecutive FA Cup Finals 1984, 85 and 86 we were quite outstanding
Under Kevin Keegan when he was Newcastle manager I will give credit where it is due Newcastle should have won the league and played some lovely attacking football but had little idea of how to defend
I’ve been lucky enough to meet Sir Bobby Robson and he was just a lovely man but he should have taken the job many years before he did.
My most amusing memory of Newcastle is the time Season Ticket Holders had to vacate their seats because the club wanted to build a new press box UNTHINKABLE
Finally in 1966 when England staged the World Cup, Goodison Park staged more matches than any ground outside Wembley including the Semi Final
    West Germany Vs Russia

I do like/rate Gosling who in the long term will play for England
Everton slipped up (badly) but if he can do the dirty on Everton he will do the same to other clubs
Finally I think Dan Gosling's future prospects will be better if he stays at Everton

  9. Paul C - why won't he become any better at Newcastle (IF he signs there - he has not yet)? Steven Harper, Steven Taylor and Andy Carroll are just a few current examples of players Newcastle have successfully developed (and are continuing to develop). It is rather arrogant to suggest a player won't become better just because he is not at Everton. If Everton was such a bastion of football development, they'd have been able to keep Wayne Rooney, and players would be heading their in their flocks to join the greatest football club in the land, and they'd be seeing regular top 4 finishes. The fact is, just like in the early 90's (Keegan era) and around the turn of the Millenium (the Sir Bobby years), Newcastle are an up and coming team. He is joining them at a time (IF he joins them) when Newcastle are able to offer him regular something Everton won't - regular first team football, which is rationally something any footballer wants. And whats more, contrary to not developing at all, if he joins Newcastle, he will be able to develop his football skills in line with the clubs gradual return to the business end of the Premier League table. Sound a better deal to me than sitting on the bench for most the time at the eternally just-above-mid-table Everton.

  12. As an Everton supporter I'm just shocked at the ineptitude of the staff at Everton. If he wants to go then fair enough. There are too many players ahead of him in central midfield (Cahill, Arteta, Rodwell, Fellaini, Osman) for him to catch on without dramatic improvement. But to let him walk for nothing is just incompetence. Rank stupidity.

  13. Wonder if Everton are going to launch a legal challenge.

Yes, I know all the comments about verbal agreements being worthless but a Contract does not have to be written. A written signed document merely clarifies the rights of both parties in a Contract. Gosling has had quotes published in the Liverpool Echo expressing his delight about his contract extension, he presumably has continued to draw his wages from EFC after his contract expired(it would be interesting to know if such wages were at the increased rate) and he has up until now been receiving treatment at EFC's training ground for his injury. These facts could easily be deemed in Law to be evidence of agreement by his actions to extend his contract.

My Comment that Everton have spent more years in Division 1 is true as Arsenal were elected to the Second Division and have been relegated (only once)
Did you however know the circumstances of Arsenal's promotion?
When Everton joined the Football League there was only One division
The issue being and why I mentioned it is that there are not many bigger clubs to join than Everton
