Crystal Palace boss Peter Taylor praised defender Jose Fonte after he put in a fine performance against Everton at the weekend.The 23-year-old completed a year-long loan move from Benfica last week and despite being short of match fitness impressed Taylor.

He said: "I thought he did very well and we took a big chance in playing him because he has only played half an hour of football and hasn't trained very much.

"So I was a bit nervous to play him against a team with Andy Johnson and Victor Anichebe up front but he did very well.

"There's a slight doubt that he'd get in ahead of Leon Cort and Mark Hudson but there's always a chance."
