Scunthorpe manager Nigel Adkins believes he has a star in the making in summer signing Gary Hooper and tips him for success in League One.Adkins moved swiftly to bolster his attacking options following Martin Paterson's move to Burnley and lured Hooper to Glanford Park from Southend.

The 20-year-old is expected to lead the line against Leeds this weekend in the opening game of the season and Adkins is backing the youngster to blossom.

"I think Gary is a top player," Adkins told the Scunthorpe Telegraph. "We first spotted him when he played for Leyton Orient against us when we won the League One championship.

"He was a thorn in our side that day so we kept a track on him since then, as we do with several players.

"And the moment Martin Paterson left, that very next day we put a phone call in and we tracked him. I certainly believe we have got another exciting talent at the football club."
