Villa agree deal for Boro's Young

Thu 07 Aug, 10:45 AM

Aston Villa are set for talks with Luke Young after agreeing a fee - believed to be £5million - with Middlesbrough for the defender. The England right-back only moved to the North-East last summer when Boro paid Charlton £2.5million for his signature.

Now Villa are believed to have offered around £5million for the 29-year-old and the Teesside club have accepted the deal.

Young is now heading for Birmingham for talks and looks set to seal his move to the Midlands before the weekend.

Villa are also believed to be leading Portsmouth and Sunderland in the race for Reading's Nicky Shorey and could very well bring in two full-backs in the next few days.

  1. As a Boro fan I hate to say it, but the ins and outs this year make it look like we are preparing for life in the Championship

  2. KT, I can't agree more with you, when clubs should be holding onto their best players. Like us, we will lose Barry for 2 reasons, Champions League Football and the cash of the player brings in. Likewise, Villa can offer LY something Middlesborough can't - European football (in any sense) and 5million.

  3. Crazy.....why would the Boro sell one of their best players, when we clearly don't have a top class replacement in that area of the pitch. Selling a world class right back is NOT the thing to do when your heading into a campaign where more is expected of you.
OK, so 2.5 million profit is good business in the space of 12 months, but Southgate should be looking to keep his better, more experienced premiership players.
Lets hope Luke cant agree personal terms with Villa, and we can keep hold of him for at least another 6 months, until we find a likewise, or better replacement.
