Premier League - Countdown: Tottenham Hotspur

Eurosport - Fri, 07 Aug 16:28:00 2009

Eurosport-Yahoo! continues its countdown to the Premier League season with a look at Tottenham.

FOOTBALL 2009 Asia Trophy Tottenham Hotspur celebrate Robbie Keane's goal in final - 0

Manager: Harry Redknapp

Last 10 Seasons in Premier League: (1999/2000 to 2008/2009): 10/12/9/10/14/9/5/5/11/8

POSSIBLE STARTING XI:

Heurelho Gomes

Vedran Corluka - Jonathan Woodgate - Ledley King - Benoit Assou-Ekotto

Aaron Lennon - Wilson Palacios - Jermaine Jenas - Luka Modric

Robbie Keane - Peter Crouch

BACK-UPS FROM: Carlo Cudicini, Alan Hutton, Kyle Naughton, Pascal Chimbonda, Gareth Bale, Sebastien Bassong, Michael Dawson, Dorian Dervite, David Bentley, Jamie O'Hara, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Tom Huddlestone, John Bostock, Jake Livemore, Danny Rose, Giovani dos Santos, Jonathan Obika, Roman Pavlyuchenko, Jermain Defoe.

TRANSFERS:

In - Peter Crouch (Portsmouth, £9m), Sebastien Bassong (Newcastle United, £8m), Kyle Naughton, Kyle Walker (both Sheffield United, undisclosed)

Out - Darren Bent (Sunderland, £10m), Kyle Walker (Sheffield United, loan), Adel Taarabt (Q.P.R., loan), Ben Alnwick (Norwich, loan), Troy Archibald-Henville (Exeter, loan), David Button (Crewe, loan), Gilberto (released), Ricardo Rocha (released), Chris Gunter (Nottingham Forest, £1.75m), Didier Zokora (Sevilla, undisclosed), Andros Townsend (Leyton Orient, loan), Cian Hugton (Lincoln City, loan), Andy Barcham (Gillingham, free), Danny Hutchins (Yeovil, free)

POSITIVES: Spurs have backed Redknapp with ample funds, and the wily old manager has brought in known quantities such as strikers Keane, Defoe and Crouch. Last season's worrying flirt with relegation is a distant memory and a top-six finish looks a real possibility. With Sebastien Bassong bolstering an injury-prone back line following his move from Newcastle, the future looks bright.

NEGATIVES: After years of plugging away, hoping to crack the top four, they had been overtaken by Aston Villa and Everton before Manchester City spent themselves to the front of the queue for Champions League football. Consequently that aim looks harder than ever for Spurs. Redknapp has spent big since his arrival last year, but his improved squad has brought some tough selection dilemmas, like which of his three front-line strikers to leave out.

VERDICT: It may be a strange kind of progress, but Tottenham are back to where they were under Martin Jol following the disastrous Juande Ramos reign. Problem is, they now face much stiffer competition in the battle for the top-four positions. 6th.

  1. Left flank still looks a problem. We need a left-footed winger to swing crosses onto Crouchy's head. Must be able to defend. If not Bale, then who? Ashley Young would of course be great. Also need another holding midfielder so we could play 4-2-3-1 or 4-5-1 against strong attacking teams. Not sure if the left-back position is as strong as it could be, nice to know Bassong can also play there. Harry needs to strengthen those two positions to stop Spurs shipping goals. And it would give him more tactical options.

  2. Comment #9 has it spot on. Spurs finish 6th this year with a shot at 5th. The "big spending" hype is overblown. Harry brought in a quality striker he and the team are familiar with in Crouch. Frankly, this is an upgrade to the cancerous Bent situation. The other two signings are both defenders. May have spent a little too much on Bassong, but so what?! It is still not an enormous fee and less than was originally reported, and a need was addressed. Tottenham is a savvy, profitable club. Don't forget the new stadium will only serve to increase the club's profile and player's desire to join the Spurs - as will a UEFA run next year.
Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City, and Man U will definitely finish ahead of Spurs. Tottenham will be in the mix with Aresenal, Everton, and Villa -- and if they play to form should qualify for Europe. Anything less is a disappointment.

  3. Crouch and Defoe is the best pairing at Tottenham. It's obvious from their days at Portsmouth that they like playing with each other.

  4. I getting pretty fed up of all the 'big spending Spurs' comments about; if you look at our spending vs player sales income this summer they're pretty much even. It's been the same for the last few years. Yes we've spent money, but that's because of the instability we've had and the fact that money made has largely been reinvested in the club.

Not all of it mind, we still make a year-on-year profit, so really this 'splashout Sours' attitude is nonsense.

  5. I think Harry should pair Defoe with Crouch. We already know that they like playing with each other.

From Lawrence, on Sat 8 Aug 3:44PM
  6. If we take results from the game Harry took over & onwards, had we achieved that kind of form the entire season long, we would have been punching between 4th & 6th easily.
We lost only 2 games out of the 8 games against the 'top 4 clubs'.
Palacios made a difference also, a player I feel overlooked by 2 of the 'top 4 clubs' that could have made a difference to them, their loss is our gain.
The 8 clubs we talk about most will be dropping points to eachother week in & week out, that will keep it tight & interesting.
Unlike what you haters think, most Spurs fans do not expect top 4 every season, it is a weight of expectency the media puts upon us, it does not help us, it hinders us.
I do expect Celtic to lift The Champions League European Cup!!!!!!!

  9. I rate 6th or 7th is about right for spurs top 8 is gonna be the big four + city, villa, everton and spurs in no particular order. Problem is i definitely cant see them finishing higher than everton, villa are better until their lack of depth starts to be exposed and city could either implode or do very very well this season. £8 million for bassong has to be one of the most ridiculous prices for a player ever though, hes only worth 3 or 4 million really

  10. Errr everyone is talking about Villa, Everton, Man City and even West Ham has everyone forgotten that it was Fulham who finished above Spurs??

Dont get me wrong im a Spurs supporter and really hope that we can finish in the top 4 but we have made pretty poor signings 1 defender in a team that leaked so many goals and has 2 very injury prone CB's why are we buying strikers?? If we improve on last season i will be very surprised!! Happy but surprised!!

  11. How can you say harry is a bad manager, he took over when we were struggling to stay in the premiership and he took us right up to challenging for europe only to be pipped last day of season. I know were not a top four team but keep your stupid comments to yourself. Thats to comment 15.

Harry is to me a bad manager, so I don't think spurs are gonna get better this season !, He has been spending a lot of money having some like Gio in the bench. Money not always solve problems if you dont have the brains to use it.
    He should learn from Everton

  14. Dont think our cbs are as damaged as is reported in the press and interveiws
lets see who plays in the first game could be a surprise or 2
as for top 4 we should be up to it and we saw the real villa at the end of last season not good will be lucky for top half ,toffee men have a good side and manager and will be up there too
as for city hope they explode i like them but hate all these money men wrecking the game.

  15. It worry's me....no centre backs fit for the start of the season, Bassong is suspended for the first two games. Can't see us getting any change from Liverpool...played 1 lost 1? It worry's me.....

  16. I raced cars for many years and can tell you it is easy to pass all the poor drivers but thing get a lot more difficult to get past the good drivers! same in football - you have spent the money and have no excuses now - but much better teams and managers at the top. Last year Harry did what he was good at, but this year he is out of his depth to think of the top 4 - but he will make a lot more money.

  17. @soladoyeosikoya
Barca were going to get rid of dos santos as they didn't like the fact that he would miss numerous tranning sessions due to hangovers, he kept getting into trouble with coaches because he would be out most nights getting drunk, so he didn't have a say in being put up for a transfer.

From matt s, on Fri 7 Aug 10:58AM
  18. People are forgetting the state of there position last season and still finished 7th!
    I would expect a top 6 finish............perhaps 5th

  19. 'Back-ups' 'BACK-UPS' !?..wtf is this article reserved for netball perhaps ?

The writer has got it spot-on about Pavluyachenko NOT being a top-3 choice striker tho'
sadly he plays more like a p***-poor version of Berbatov.

From Idiot deluxe, on Fri 7 Aug 10:38AM
  20. If they can get together as a team and keep the winning attitude giving 100% then it is possible :)
