The third part of our countdown of the world's greatest current footballers.
21 - Maicon (Internazionale / Brazil)
The Internazionale man is so good, he has managed to keep the extraordinary Daniel Alves out of the Brazilian national team. Like his predecessor as Inter right-back, Javier Zanetti, Maicon manages to exert a disproportionate influence over the game from a position more often occupied by solid citizens than genuine match-winners. Maicon is a more solid defender than Alves, albeit slightly less explosive going forward. Nevertheless, he was often Inter's most effective attacker last season, not least in the Champions League last sixteen tie against Manchester United. Also famous for his involvement in the spectacular brawl against Valencia in 2007.
22 - Javier Mascherano (Liverpool / Argentina)
Most defensive midfielders struggle to get themselves noticed, but Mascherano's work rate and reading of the game impressed Diego Maradona so much he made the Liverpool man captain of Argentina. Mascherano arrived in England at the same time as Carlos Tevez, and while the midfielder's countryman hogs the headlines, his understated excellence was a major reason why Liverpool were able to contend for the Premier League title. The 25-year-old might keep things simple but that does not mean his job is easy. He suffocates opponents with his constant hassling and harrying, and has made himself a potential transfer target for every top club in Europe.
23 - Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus / Italy)
The Juventus goalkeeper was generally thought to have had an 'off' year last season, but his performances still stand head and shoulders above those of nearly any other goalkeeper. Like Peter Schmeichel, Buffon uses his imposing size to intimidate strikers. He rushes out, closes down angles and denies time to forwards. He also boasts superb reflexes, agility and catching ability. While not as immune to errors as he once appeared, many would still claim that Buffon is the best all-around goalkeeper in the world. Buffon is 31 and just five caps away from completing his century for Italy.
24 - David Villa (Valencia / Spain)
Barring a mammoth late bid, Villa could be the one that got away from Real Madrid. It is easy to see why Valencia have fought so hard to keep him. Villa is a model of consistency, having found the net over 100 times in four seasons, with a career-best 31 last term. His sharpness, skill and deadly finishing offer a glimpse of what Michael Owen might be like if he still had pace. Villa is arguably even better for Spain, closing on Raul's scoring record with remarkable speed, rattling in 31 goals in 49 caps and forming a Euro 2008-winning strike partnership with Fernando Torres.
25 - Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United / England)
There is plenty not to like about Ferdinand. Yet behind the endless self-promotion, the lifestyle magazine and the sub-Beadle's About TV show, the Manchester United man has matured into one of the most complete defenders in world football. He has stopped trying to be Franz Beckenbauer, sharpened up his concentration and formed a world-class partnership with Nemanja Vidic. Often cast as the silk to Vidic's steel, Ferdinand has nonetheless developed a welcome no-nonsense streak to accompany his neat touch. Although he narrowly missed out on the England captaincy to John Terry, he should inherit the United armband when Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville retire.
26 - Thierry Henry (Barcelona / France)
Remember him? Henry has turned into something of a forgotten man at Barcelona, in the shadow of Leo Messi, Samuel Eto'o, Xavi and Andres Iniesta. Yet he returned to electric form in his second season at Camp Nou on the left side of Barca's attacking trident. While unable to run the show as he did at Arsenal, Henry continues to use his unique combination of skill and pace to devastating effect; he weighed in with 26 goals and plenty of assists in Barcelona's treble season. Henry is France's record goalscorer, with 48 strikes from 111 appearances, and should be at next summer's World Cup.
27 - Yoann Gourcuff (Bordeaux / France)
It is a sign of the Bordeaux playmaker's progress that he is no longer referred to as 'The New Zidane' - Yoann Gourcuff alone will do. The 23-year-old has made his own reputation as a skilful, creative attacking midfielder. Gourcuff enjoyed a simply inspirational season as Les Girondins ended Lyon's seven-year stranglehold on the Ligue 1 title, and he has signed a four-year deal to make his loan from Milan to Bordeaux permanent. Is now a regular in the French set-up, and along with the likes of Franck Ribery and Karim Benzema, he should ensure Les Bleus are a force to be reckoned with at the 2010 World Cup.
28 - Diego Forlan (Atletico Madrid / Uruguay)
From laughing stock to feared assassin in the space of a few years. Having taken 27 games to get on the scoresheet for Manchester United, Forlan's consistent performances for Villarreal and then Atletico have yielded 117 goals in five seasons. Now 30, he is coming off his best season to date, which included 32 goals in 33 Liga games for Atletico and saw him win his second European Golden Boot award - his club recently said they would rather have him than Karim Benzema and it is easy to see why. Earlier in the summer he was linked with a £20 million move to Liverpool - a far cry from Diego Forlorn.
29 - Daniele De Rossi (Roma / Italy)
The all-action De Rossi is arguably the complete central midfielder. Strong, determined and as comfortable winning the ball as he is using it, De Rossi is the kind of player every team should have. Aged 25 and still improving, he is closing in on a half-century of caps for his country. Scored a penalty in the 2006 World Cup final but missed most of the tournament through suspension after elbowing USA's Brian McBride, for which he later apologised. Has taken Francesco Totti's number 10 shirt for the national team and will surely inherit the captain's armband at Roma when Totti hangs up his boots.
30 - Yuri Zhirkov (Chelsea / Russia)
A new £18 million signing at Stamford Bridge, Zhirkov promises to become one of the most exciting players in the Premier League. Rather misleadingly, he has been described as the Russian Ronaldinho. If he must be compared to a Brazilian star, it must surely be Roberto Carlos, given his pace, stamina, surging touchline-hugging runs and set-piece ability. Zhirkov could be the genuine wide player Chelsea presently lack. He operated as an attacking full-back for his country at Euro 2008, but Ashley Cole's presence means he may feature further forward at Stamford Bridge. Either way, Carlo Ancelotti will surely find a place for him
HOW IT WORKS
We have selected the best players in the world and will be counting down from 50 to one throughout the summer. Every day until Friday, August 7 we will reveal the next player on the list, along with the reasons why we rate him.
HOW WE MADE THE LIST
The list, obviously, is subjective. All the number-crunching in the world will not tell you whether Gianluigi Buffon is better than Samuel Eto'o. Their functions are so different it is like trying to decide whether you prefer an orange or a tin opener.
We basically picked the team using the playground system. If all the players in the world were lined up and you had to pick them to play a match, in what order would a 'team captain' select them?
Our fictional playground captains are not trying to build an actual team, they are just picking the best player available. So there is no effort to balance players from every position.
In our estimation, good attackers win more matches than good defenders. They are the ones who command the big transfer fees, they are the ones who people pay to watch, and they are the ones who win the individual awards.
So we make no apology that the list is weighted in favour of attacking midfielders and strikers. No matter how much you admire Jamie Carragher's contribution to Liverpool, you would never say he was a better or more important player than Steven Gerrard or Fernando Torres. The list reflects this.
Form is crucial. There are players who missed out on a top-50 place who might have been in the top 10 last year, but have seen their stock fall either through injury or poor form. There is no doubt Ronaldinho is a stunningly talented player, but we could not say - on current form - he is one of the 50 best in the world.
Age is irrelevant. Players are judged entirely on their current ability, not their potential. A 35-year-old is not marked down because he is at the end of his career, and an 18-year-old does not get extra credit because of the player he is expected to become. Only one thing matters - how good is the player now?
THE PLAYERS WHO MISSED OUT
Whittling the world's best players down to a final list of 50 required us to make some tough decisions. All of the following players came close to making the cut but, for one reason or another, were discarded:
Emmanuel Adebayor, David Beckham, Dimitar Berbatov, Antonio Cassano, Gael Clichy, Ashley Cole, Patrice Evra, Ryan Giggs, Gonzalo Higuain, Vedad Ibisevic, Philipp Lahm, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Lucio, Diego Milito, Joao Moutinho, Andrea Pirlo, Sergio Ramos, Ronaldinho, Marcos Senna, Wesley Sneijder, Dejan Stankovic, John Terry, Carlos Tevez, Francesco Totti, Rafael van der Vaart, Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Fabregas should be in the top 20 at least and how in gods name is Mascherano higher than Fabregas!!! all he can do is get sent off!!! Rooney and Gerrard should be in the top 20 not top 10. Messi,Ronaldo,Xavi are the only good picks,While Inesta isn't even in the top 10 when he is alot better than Rooney and Gerrard they are only there cause they are English. And Zhirkov has only started 2 games for Chelsea!!! 1 of them was coming on as a sub!!! Real talent there the only good thing he did so far is kick John Terry in the head!!! Rio Ferdinand is TERRIBLE!!!!! Arshavin is BRILLIANT!!!! He is better than the 2 English Plugs!!!! X X X X X X XX X X X XX XX

I think its just more of a money investment than real football cos even the wild over-valued transfers of some are just one of those spending sprees for football managers or is it actually the owners some of the highest are so ridiculous cos over 10 million yes can get you a good player, but even in the EU you can buy a fair quality whole team and to me a simple old footie fan, and growing more and more confused with these spending sprees i wonder if its is all worth it....

hey comment 366, u are damned funny. so cos a malaysian 'boy' scored against Van dar saar and another 'gift' from Ben Foster, makes him a world class player? that was just a warm up match. its nothing serious. so dont dream of ur 'two-goals-hero' playing in England or any other top leagues in the world. does he have a club? hmmm, probably some mushroom asian leagues. cos i know he cant make it to J-league or C-league.hehehehehe
