Badoer: Media lost me Ferrari drive

Eurosport - Mon, 07 Sep 12:21:00 2009

Italian Luca Badoer has blamed the media for Ferrari's decision to replace him with compatriot Giancarlo Fisichella for the last five races of the Formula One season.

Luca Badoer - Ferrari - 0

The reserve driver, who replaced injured Brazilian Felipe Massa after Michael Schumacher had to abandon comeback plans because of neck trouble, qualified and crossed the line last in his two races for the champions.

"Those who write don't understand how much harm they can cause. The media played a fundamental role in the decision to replace me," said the 38-year-old, who has failed to score a point in 51 grand prix starts.

With the English-speaking media dubbing Badoer "Look How Bad You Are", Ferrari moved to replace him before their home Italian Grand Prix at Monza next weekend.

A ban on testing during the season did not help Badoer, who had not started a grand prix for nearly a decade before making his comeback in Valencia last month, but he refused to be too bitter.

"I realised my dream. I will always be able to tell my kids I raced two races for Ferrari, Maranello had faith in me. I only have one regret - from the third grand prix I would have done better," he said.

"There was no agreement on how many races I would do. I thought I had time to improve. And these rules stop a reserve driver from testing and make him a victim - it happens only in Formula One."

Badoer said he wanted to stay as a Ferrari test driver despite Fisichella being named as the Italian team's reserve next year.

"My intention is to stay. I am finished with races but my relationship with Ferrari continues," he said.

"Giancarlo is a quick driver. I am happy for him, he has achieved his dream of driving a Ferrari and he will do better than me because he has been racing for years in F1 and knows the 2009 cars well. He can quickly aim for results."

  1. ''In my honest opinion I think Luca has done a sensational job during his brief return to the cockpit and should hold his head up high. Testing Testing Testing: we ALL want it back! - Such a ridiculous rule!''

Not sure how you come up with sensational, if you compare him to the other new drivers, who had not testing and had never driven in F1 and had never driven the cars they got into, when he had driven in F1 he had driven the car he was given and didn't he get the promo run as well so in fact he had done 100 laps more that the otehr new chaps. So I am not comparing him existing drivers, but the other incomers.

I have had an idea though, what if teams were made to designate a reserve driver, and on the FRiday they had a short race, say 20 laps for the reserves? Perhaps not this years car but last years or some restrictions on teh car so it is not identical to the F1 car. Fans get an extra race, they can have an 'apprentice' cup and if they do have to move up and fill the seat, they can do their 2 straight line tests to get the 'feel' of the difference

  5. It is a puzzling one isn't it Biggles. APPARENTLY Lewis only finished runner up in 2007 and won in 2008 because of the car. APPARENTLY any driver could win in that car. So, using the same logic that the car is EVERYTHING and the driver a minor component, that means the Ferrari is useless because Badoer is the same as every other driver.

Of course, the performance of Kimi in the same races does cause a paradoxical situation in which the car is good and therefore it must be Badoer that is useless. Such arguments will surely make the heads of some idiots explode at the impossibility of the situation (I wonder where touronroute has been recently?).

So, certain fake tifosi have to admit Maranello made a mistake and that the Badoer isn't that good, and as such the driver is CRUCIAL to the success of a car, and as such Hamilton is good enough to have won in 2008 and Button is good enough to be leading this year. After all, if the car is EVERYTHING then Badoer shouldn't have finished dead last in two races.

Alternatively, these same people need to admit that they support a team whose cars aren't that good, in fact the worst on the grid, and therefore it is justifiable that Badoer finished last and that supports the argument that Mclaren won Lewis the WDC and not Lewis himself.

What a predicament to be in.

  8. 6-1-6: You suggest that Badoer came last because the Ferrari was rubbish. Well Kimi WON the race in the same car so it couldn't have been that bad could it?

  16. Testing is absolutely VITAL to any kind of motor sport, especially F1 ..

How can anyone think a man can sit in the seat of a modern day F1 car with no testing whatsoever and be expected to race competitively from the word go? - Impossible!

I honestly think that the media amongst others have come down too rough on Luca.
