Premier League - Kuyt injured doing overhead kick

Reuters - Mon, 06 Sep 19:15:00 2010

Liverpool's Dutch striker Dirk Kuyt will be out for several weeks after injuring his shoulder when he fell awkwardly while attempting a bicycle kick in training.

"He tries that manoeuvre a lot but this time it went wrong," Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk said of the incident, which took place in training ahead of the Euro 2012 qualifier against Group E rivals Finland in Rotterdam.

"He pulled some ligaments in his shoulder and maybe some are torn."

The news will be a major blow for Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson, who only recently persuaded the Dutchman to stay at Anfield following interest during the transfer window.

The player's injury means Van Marwijk will be without the forward line he fielded in the World Cup final defeat by Spain in July.

Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben is out of the Finland game with a hamstring injury while Arsenal striker Robin van Persie is sidelined by an ankle problem.

"Now the strikers are out, the others can show what they can do," said the coach.

The Dutch are also without defender Khalid Boulahrouz because of a groin injury but John Heitinga is ready to return after suspension.

  10. No.75 Redbart 1, don't talk rubbish, if you don't want the risk of players picking up injuries playing for 'other' teams - I take it that's supposed to mean the national side - then use your considerable 'fan' power (bit of sarcasm there, you have no power same as any other fan in the country), have a word with your chairman and tell him you no longer wish to sign players that are internationals. Once your policy has been taken onboard enjoy your slide down the divisions.

  14. also i think u will find that pratice makes perfect am sure as kid like the rest of us have done we have tried to master certain skills to improve as player thats why we train to get better

  15. i could be wrong but thats what training is about ? surely to get better and improve your game i think he was just unlucky that he landed awkardly it could happen to any player its part and parcel of the game from man utd fan

From Sandra, on Tue 7 Sep 16:05
  16. Why have you reported it in such a way? Why could you not simply say that Kuyt was injured in training? The way it is presented suggests that you think he was arrogantly attempting an acrobatic feat that was beyond his capabilities, and he should therefore have never attempted it. But players doing things that are beyond most people's abilities is part of the reason that we watch football - it can even be entertaining when it goes wrong. And players have to practice such things in order to attempt them during a game. It takes guts to attempt something different, so don't belittle a player for trying to perfect his technique.
