Police have launched a murder investigation after a Wales fan died following an incident outside Wembley Stadium before the Euro 2012 qualifying loss to England.

On Wednesday the deceased was named as Michael John Dye, 44, from Cardiff.

Six people, all believed to be Welsh, have been arrested over the incident. Metropolitan Police confirmed they were called after reports of an assault outside the ground around half an hour before the 7.45pm kick-off.

"Officers and London Ambulance Service attended. A man, believed to be aged in his 40s, was taken to a north London hospital suffering from head injuries. He was pronounced dead at 8.50pm," a police statement said.

"Police believe they know the man's identity, but await formal identification and confirmation that all next of kin have been informed. A post-mortem will be scheduled in due course."

The investigation is being carried out by officers from the Homicide and Serious Crime Command.

A London Ambulance Service spokesman added: "Staff treated a 44-year-old man who had suffered a cardiac arrest.

"Extensive efforts were made to resuscitate the patient and he was taken to hospital."

Championship outfit Cardiff City released a statement on Tuesday evening, revealing that the victim was a fan of the South Wales club.

"Late on Tuesday night details reached us concerning a tragedy where a Wales and Cardiff City supporter died at the match between England and Wales," it read.

"Out of respect for the family of the supporter, the sensitivity of the situation and until full details are circumstances are ascertained, no statements will be made until deemed fit by proper channels."

The BBC reported that it is not thought inter-club rivalry, such as that which Cardiff share with Swansea City, is behind the incident.

Fellow fan Ollie Ayton was close by when the incident occurred.

"I did not see him fall as I was facing the other way but I turned immediately to see him unconscious," he told the BBC.

"There did not appear to be any fight before; I cannot confirm this as I did not see it, but there was no excess noise or shouting that signalled a fight.

"My friends and I went to watch the match after we realised we couldn't help.

"I left 85 minutes into the game and there were lots of police officers and the area was cordoned off."

Wales coach Gary Speed offered his condolences to Dye's family and agreed the incident had overshadowed the match.

"It's a game of football at the end of the day and there's nothing more precious than life," he told Sky Sports. "The players and the staff, we're all deeply saddened by the news that we found out after the game."

England won the match 1-0 with an Ashley Young goal.

  1. first of, RIP to the fan.

second, why all this debate about wars, British relations etc etc.

The comments about the IRA seem to be a mixture of thoughts. It as in the IRA have been around since 1913 and was a revolutionary military organisation who waged war against the British rule and take over. Michael Collins (the founder) has been put down in books as an Irish hero, and it's true. This does not make a terrorist group. When countries invade, you attack. it is how world war 2 started. When the Nazi's invaded Britain, we/use attacked and defended yes?

Don't get me wrong, today, yes the IRA of today are indeed what i would call terrorists.

This fan, may have been beaten, by any culture, really it makes do difference in the end,

Heart goes out to his family and friends RIP again.

  5. End times- Your analysis of the Iraq war is surprisingly detailed and correct. So where do you get off calling the IRA 'freedom fighters' when much of their revenue is generated from drug dealing, robbery, & murder within IRELAND (not NORTHERN Ireland). This happened to come from an IRISH former cop who had friends killed by the IRA within Ireland. If you hate England go ahead and say it. But don't live this fantasy that the garbage that parades as 'freedom fighters' is any more about 'freedom' than any other terrorist organization on the planet, whether they be football supporters clubs, religious zealots, the IRA, or governments making up stories about non-existent weapons. Be a hateful bigot, but leave the fairy tales in your IRA sponsored and censored (where's the 'freedom' in that) fairy tale history books. This story is about football hooliganism which is plenty bad enough without your nonsense.

  6. It is a bit premature to speculate on what might have happened to this poor guy. I just hope it was not Swansea fans getting at a Cardiff fan but it would not surprise me. I never go to games now as the thugs ranting and screaming put you right off. I recall the time when I followed Swansea in the old Second Div. and we used to play Cardiff all the time. You could visit Ninian Park and stand amongst the Cardiff fans. Yes there was banter but no knives ot other weapons. If a good goal was scored it would be applauded by both sets of fans. Now they want to kill the scorer. It costs too much money to follow a PL team when you are on benefits so you have to take it out on somebody. By the way, nice to see the New Wales. There is hope, but not for that old England side.

  17. As the whole subject has decended into a racist free-for-all, I thought I would add my two cents. In the interest of clarity:

    (a) While it is true that the British did not cause the potato blight in Ireland, they used the more than ample remaining crops to feed their army and made no attempt to address the problem, even though the solution was readily available. It is a complete untruth to call the potato blight a "famine". There was plenty of food but it was comandeered to feed the troops, at the expense of woman and children.

    (b) Britain saw foreign countries as a ready source of free labour and did not have the foresight to picture the radical change in society, all the forced labour would bring. Britain, in fifty to eighty years time will be a much changed country from the state we now know.

    (c) It is another completely erronious statement to say that Britain is bailing Ireland out of anything. They have provided a bilateral loan as is normal between trading partners. Britain is receiving a handsome interest rate for this loan and were trading to cease between Britain and Ireland, both economies would grind to a halt within five years. It is in no ones interest for either of these two states to sever social, economic and political ties.

    (d) The socio-economic and political situation between Britain and Ireland is the continuation of hundreds of years of mutual invasions, exploitations, wars, peace, love, hate, respect, disdain but hopefully and finally tolerance. Let us not forget that there are thousands of British people living and working in Ireland. I am sure some are on state benefit there as well.

Finally, Rev. Ian Paisley and Martin McGuinness were sworn and hated enimies for years.....until they spoke to one another as equals. If they can come to terms with each other, everyone else should have no difficulty!

The IRA are freedom fighters, whereas the United Kingdom is a terrorist state. Nobody wanted cancerous-British terrorists (like your racist ancestors) contaminating, invading, dividing, startving and torturing and colonizing not just the land of Ireland, but in all the other countries your nation plundered and screwed.
