Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock has hit back at Australia coach Pim Verbeek for urging Nick Carle to quit Selhurst Park.

Socceroos chief Verbeek has left the midfielder out of his squad for the World Cup qualifier against Qatar this month, and said: "Players like Nicky should never go to England. He has to win second balls at Palace and this isn't one of his strong points."

Warnock was unhappy with the Dutchman's comments and challenged him to come and watch a Palace game first-hand before making his judgment.

Warnock told the South London Press: "We have people like Shaun Derry and Ben Watson winning the second ball to give Nick freedom on the pitch.

"The coach should talk about his own performances with Australia. He doesn't know anything about Palace - when has he seen us play? He's only read newspapers or seen TV games, which you can't possibly judge.

"He should come and see us more often and get a better assessment."
