Former Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce has claimed Mike Ashley's takeover of the club was driven by the billionaire's desire for a quick profit.
The sportswear tycoon is currently in talks with up to eight consortia as he looks to sell after just 16 months at the helm.
Ashley opted to walk away from St James' Park in the wake of fans' outrage over the departure of Kevin Keegan, who quit as manager after alleging boardroom interference in his transfer dealings.
The owner's acrimonious exit from the Tyneside club looks set to be soothed by a healthy profit on what he paid in June 2007 - even taking into account his outlay since.
And Allardyce, sacked by Ashley before he brought in Keegan, believes that was always in the businessman's mind when he launched his takeover bid for Newcastle.
"It is crystal clear now what the motives were for Mike Ashley," the former Bolton boss said.
"I think that he did buy the club in the hope that he could quickly sell it on for a vast profit."
The Magpies currently sit third bottom of the Barclays Premier League after claiming a single point from their last five games.
"It is going from bad to horrendous and there is part of me that thinks I'm glad I'm out of it," Allardyce added.
"I thought Kevin was going to get the money I didn't get - but the continuous sales and players moving in and out over the summer obviously caused him to conclude the job was untenable and the club was thrown into chaos."

we dont care who plays for us as long as they give it their all
we are just sick of your arrogant tone and want you condemmed to
the knackers yard of football.

swiss tony, your mam and me had a lovely time together last night.she promised to show me sunderlands attractions, she took me to the glass centre(puts sydney opera house to shame),then we hung out with the single mothers and the unemployed at crowtree, then we eat out at sunderlands world famous restaurant..GREGGS,then we had great sex and she said geordies make better lovers than mackems cos we dont have a tash, wear shell suits and we actually wash our dongs more than once a week unlike the smelly mackems.

To "Swiss roll Tony and Chris F, does that stand for what I think it does!, go home, Lie down take an asprin and come back to us when you have something sensible to say to us! I mean yes we are in a total mess, however if you seriously think that the Mackams are "On the march" then may I suggest that all major hospitals, yes even Sunderland General, have CT scanders, pop in , its even free, you are a whole, massive, whopping, uncatchable, unbelivable, unatainable wait for it 3 points, yes!,3 points ahead of us come the month of October, we Geordies can only stand back and "admire" your world stars such as "Leadbittear" "Jones" "Nosworthy" and slim boy "Gray" along with your ex Spurs "superstars" you now have a team, not only are the rest of the Premiership fear but the whole world!! how can we respond to your future "World domination"!!!!
christopher f i assume you are red and white.
we all know this dream cant last forever but while its going on im going to enjoy it as much as possible))))))))
wont be happy till they are in the northern league))
YEAH I BEEN THERE. I'M ALSO FROM DEVON AND I COULDN'T GIVE A @#$% ABOUT THEM.
BLINKERED NUMPTIES. YEAH YOUR RIGHT SHEARER AS WELL BUT HE WONT GO NEAR THE JOB.
BUT THEN HE HAS BRAINS. ENOUGH SAID.
I had to speak out at robbo's comments because after visiting Newcastle last year I would love to move up there. The city is amazing as are the people and they all support the one team. Have you ever been there robbo? and you're forgetting shearer
also is a geordie! I come from Devon and I care about Newcastle Utd!
Have you ever met a Geordie fan...
IQ of a savloy and looks of your nan.
Dreams of a big club and blind as bat...
Looks like a @#$% Biker born rat.
Always the statement of north east number one...
There cocky remarks of Sunderland all gone.
Still thinking that they are best of the best...
Five bellies out in the gravy stained vest.
Thinking that the world owes them a favour...
Still thinking Kevin Keegan's their saviour.
At the end of the day, the change has begun...
As Sunderland emerge the true number One.
you lot just dont see past newcastle. why would anyone from outside newcastle want anything to do with that pathetic excuse for a club and its blinkered fans.
Just face it the only one with any real talent from that area is in rehab. yes that's right GAZZA!
hope you go out of business and do us all a favour.
I'm assuming newcastle is a PLC like all (?) other premier clubs.
Therefore the club is at the mercy of the stockmarket/credit crunch etc.
Football fans cannot applaud takeovers by Billionaires and then cry when it's run differently.
Someone on five live was talking about the reason clubs are called clubs and the reason why this has all gone out of the window! makes you think.
If you take the money from these people you have to understand it is no longer a club. Its just a place you go to to watch players from all over the world playing footie.
And as good a level as it is - how long is it before the England side will consist of Championship players only?
Ashley bought the club for 134million, reduced the debt by 110million he's still paying for a lot of newcastles purchases from other managers, and has spent over 10 million on 2 players. Then he brings back Keegan which i'm sure wasn't cheap and made a bad mistake with Wise, which Keegan agreed to initially. Then newcastle turn on him when Keegan spits the dummy out AGAIN. Newcastle has turned into a circus and i for one would love it to turn into another Leeds United.
Can we get therapy for Christopher F? Or another brain cell to replace the one he has but which is clearly damaged?
sometimes while im asleep at night i wake up in fits of loud laughter when i reaslise the posistion that the thick fickkle maggie muppets are in, then i go back to sleep with a grin on my face when i realise im not even dreaming - its true
i hope you go down like leeds but go a stage further and go bust
its all you deserve you b&w fatties
i'm not a newcastle fan...but that ashely dude is a complete & utter tit !!! football fan he is not but a greedy b*stard he is. Came into the club with all these promises of loads of money to spend, my arse !!!! yet could go on a mad bender to new york & blow big money in one night on buying drinks for all..complete @#$% & i hope he gets little or nothing when he finally sells...teach the fat forker a lesson
