Tour de France - 2008 Tour stage winners test positive

Eurosport - Tue, 07 Oct 09:05:00 2008

German Stefan Schumacher of Gerolsteiner and Italian rider Leonardo Piepoli have tested positive for doping during the 2008 Tour de France.

Schumacher (pictured) won two stages of this year's Tour while Piepoli triumphed in one.

Gerolsteiner team boss Hans-Michael Holczer confirmed reports by French newspaper L'Equipe that Schumacher had failed a test, but did not say whether the substance in question had been banned blood-booster EPO, as the sports daily claimed.

"Tour Director Christian Prudhomme confirmed it [the positive test] to me," Holczer told German sports news agency SID.

"I have no doubt that it's true."

Schumacher denied to SID that he had cheated through blood doping.

"I am hearing it from you for the first time," he said. "I can only say that I have not doped: this is complete nonsense."

Holczer told SID legal steps against Schumacher were planned. "We have all been betrayed by these people," he said.

Piepoli meanwhile tested positive for EPO on two occasions during the race.

French Anti-Doping Agency president Pierre Bordry told Reuters: "Leonardo Piepoli tested positive twice, on July 4 and 15. The substance is EPO."

Piepoli has been summoned to appear before the Italian Olympic Committee on Friday.

He and fellow countryman Riccardo Ricco were sacked during the Tour after his Saunier Duval team-mate failed a dope test.

Piepoli had not yet failed a test but Saunier Duval said at the time he had "violated the team's code of ethics". The entire team quit the race when it was announced Ricco, winner of two stages in the event, tested positive.

Ricco has already been banned for two years.

Piepoli, 37, won the 10th stage of the Tour at Hautacam, a day before testing positive for the second time during the race.

He and Schumacher are the sixth and seventh riders to fail a test on the 2008 Tour, after Ricco, Spaniards Juan Manuel Beltran and Moises Duenas Nevado, Kazakh Dmitri Fofonov and France's Jimmy Casper.

Casper was cleared by the French federation last month.

  1. He was on viagra a lot of guys are using it you could tell at the end because he had a major diamond cutter on the podium. The peloton was full of it this tour and now I guess they have found a test..

  2. I think after watching the TDF for years, and being a fan, listening to the velo club in France and the respect I had for the people on the panel, I feel for certain that all those outstanding winners and stage winners are and have been all along cheats
Armstrong, Ulrich and basso included, and the hardest thing is to have participated clean and to have been beaten out of site by cheats, I don’t see anything honourable in winning like that.

  3. lance armstrong will be found out in time is not humanly possible to ride like that for all those tours i now see hes protesting about testing his frozen sample for drugs tests not available then

  4. Pantani didn't fail a drug test in 99 - his hemocrit level was over 50% which due to 'health' reasons was ejected from the Giro. But this was not a failed drug test. He could have started racing 2 weeks later. Of course high hemocrit is a good indicator of EPO use but certainly not conclusive of drug use. Now I'm not saying he didn't dope - in fact he probably did but he did NOT test positive ever.

  6. Well about time, was waiting for this positive test since he went from good time-trialist to world beater overnight. No surprise but shame they couldnt have got him sooner. All the signs were there, sudden massive improvement, teammates none to keen on him, yet he gets away with it all til now. good riddance to bad rubbish.

  7. You're right. Excessive Heamocrit levels.

The only bloke who has been given a ban that i feel a little bit sorry for is Petachi. I beleive CONI banned him for using to much of his asthma drug which he had UCI permission for. All others who dope to win deserve their fate.

  8. Oh, and one more thing. Pantani "did" fail a drug test in the 1999 Giro. Know your facts tmartine.

  9. infinite.loop1, you are a tit. It clearly is the cleanest tour in years as there have been more positive tests for years. The TdF cannot stop riders from doping but it can put the test in place to catch them when they do. This has obviously worked as this story proves, i just hope the young british riders coming through are not stupid enough to think that they won't get caught of they feel the need for a little synthetic "help". I'll see you all at Goodwood for the 3rds race this sunday, if you've got the legs for it.

  10. tmartine, my logic is quite astute actually. I do not condemn people until "after" they are caught. Feel free to run your own personal Inquisition if you so choose. I will continue to cheer for my favorite riders until they are "proven" to be doping. Lance never failed a test...... period.

  11. FYI Maurice1958, caffeine is "not" a banded substance. It use to be, but WADA dropped the ban a few years back.

  13. This is for all the people who keep talking so much pile about how the sport is clean and exciting now and they don't want Armstrong back. Well so much for that. The total of caught in last years tour keep's adding up. Welcome back Lance who never tested positive for any banned substance and is now riding for a cause even greater than himself and those around him.

  14. Solving the drugs problem is simply down to making the disincentives to cheat overpower the incentives.
Some years the incentives to take drugs will grow (e.g. Armstrong exits, Contador out)... and so the disincentives have to grow proportionately more- move 2 yr ban to 4 yr ban.
It really is as simple as that (and keep drug detection at cutting edge).
Make the system difficult to cheat and not worthwhile career-wise to cheat.

I was surpised by how Schumacher was ripping up Cancellara in the TdF's two main TTs.

Better Still why not attack the £100k a week brigade who snort there way from pay cheque to pay cheque in the beautiful sport.
I am convinced most of the comments of this nature are made by individuals who have no notion about this fantastic sport.
