England began training ahead of their upcoming World Cup qualifiers without a quartet of players, including skipper John Terry.
Terry (pictured) felt a niggle in his back at the end of Chelsea's win over Aston Villa on Sunday and was not expected to train on Tuesday ahead of Saturday's clash with Kazakhstan at Wembley.
The other missing men were Terry's Chelsea team-mate Ashley Cole, Manchester United's Wes Brown and Stewart Downing of Middlesbrough.
All four were confined to gym work, but the quartet are expected to train on Wednesday and Thursday, when it is expected Capello will play his intended side in a full-size training game.
With Joe Cole out with a foot injury, it is believed Capello will ditch the plan of having a holding midfield and instead pair Steven Gerrard with Frank Lampard in central midfield.
Although the duo has never seemed to work together as a unit, the England coach knows he needs to get the most from the world-class pair, although the presence of Gareth Barry could provide some insurance against the Eastern Europeans.
Theo Walcott is expected to retain his right-sided berth after scoring his memorable hat-trick against Croatia last month, while the return of Peter Crouch provides some competition for Emile Heskey, who should nevertheless partner Wayne Rooney in attack.

I find it pathetic that we cannot get behind England as a team. We'd rather argue about which player has won more for his club and is therefore "better". Surely we should see England as a team and not act like little girls saying players from my team are better than players from yours. This is why Englands support is rubbish. Look at the Scots, whenever they play, everybody seems so proud, we just complain that man u are better than chelsea or arsenal are better than tottenham. Grow up you arses
im so sick of clueless liverpool fans ranting ona bout lampard. lets see in the past 100 games lampard has scored 29 more goals than gerrard. also i wish liverpool hadnt won the champions in 2006 cause then gerrard would have gone to chelsea and mourinho would have taught them to play together. and by the way THE ONLY trophy gerrard has ever won was the champs in 2006. comared to lampards 2 prem titles 2 league cups an fa cup and second place or better since 2003-2004
Fred M Barry is the best midfielder in England on current form, which Villa have you been watching pancho villa?
I have read some absolute mindboggling moronic statements on this page but nothing as braindead as the comment from ricbat61 about Gerrard and Lampard. at a guess i'd say your a manc?
rrepun_7, his name is Fabio not Fabia. And he is from Italy, and Wikipedia is worth the trust..
hey guys you can't ignore Barry hes the best midfielder in England on current form
my PREDICTED team against the kazaks: James, Brown, Rio, Terry, Cole, Walcott, Gerrard, Lampard, Barry, Rooney, Heskey.
The formation would be either a 4-4-2 with gerrard/barry on the left or a 4-3-3 with walcott on the right and rooney on the left of the attack with heskey in the middle.
Now i have no problems with the line up as it is probably our strongest with the exception of j.cole and owen. but the formation is a tough one. how about a 4-2-3-1? barry and lampard in midfield with gerrard, rooney, and walcott interchanging in front of them with heskey up front to hold things up.
I mean I could look in Wiki or some other place but I dont trust these websites
Guys I was just wondering, where is Fabia Capello from?
I care not which club the England players come from, As soon as they put on an England shirt they are there for England! So any fan who is a true England supporter should drop the small minded club predjudices and support the national team. Terry Lampard Gerrard Rooney Cole Ferdinand and the rest should all be allowed to wear the shirt with pride and suffer no barraking from inter club fans who care nothing about England but are on an ego trip to see there club players wear the shirt. Come on boys wear the shirt with pride do your best and hopefully the true fans will support you as a team not as individuals representing there clubs.
u wont get the flow of attacks from the midfield without franki and he's got such class finishing that only fools would left him out of england squad. Im not saying left gerrard out coz he is another midfield maestro. so just include both of them otherwize u cant expect win without ur best players.
it is about time England reverted back to four four to formation and forget about playing with stephen gerrard and frank lampard and play either one or they other as they cannot play together in the same team although both are good players in there rightful positiion instead of playing european football play the old fashion English way ed1812002
leo...girls wear tops...its the England SHIRT!
zoe...Crouch is a prolific scorer, but no one holds the ball up like Heskey and that's why Owen succeeds when they are paired together
and lastly, @#$%.slag (chuckle)...What has Lampard won...try to Premiership League Championships (has Gerrard?...oh, I'll answer that...NO!)...I'm not Blues fan (not by a long shot) and I do agree with you that they both can't hold the England midfield together, but if all you want to go on is Gerrard and his CL Championships (not too shabby) it's just not the right argument. One or the other, I don't care who, just not the two together.
ROOOOOOOOONEY GOD !!!
suggested line up
Rooney, Hesky
Young, lampsy, Stevie, Walcott
A,cole, Terry, Ferdinard, Brown
James
theres too irons anyway, cut them up the @#$% steamers
england are amazin wen there on form gerrard and lampard cant play together and look gerrard is better by a long way look at what hes won and done for the mighty reds come on england world cup 2010 footballs comin home
of coss when you play to chelsea! you must be to squad wherever you trained or not.
why does anyone question Crouch and his ability?? check the stats people, he is one of the most prolific scorers for england ever - we shouldnt question his inclusion!!! as for Heskey - my god am i blind, what the heck is he ever included for???
helen, pls iron my shirt after you finish wash your dishes...
