Paper round: Fergie rows with Foster

Eurosport - Wed, 07 Oct 09:01:00 2009

Ben Foster's fitness, form and confidence is shot to pieces at the moment, so perhaps the last thing he needed was to get the hairdryer treatment from Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson.

Yet the luckless keeper got into a blazing row with Fergie a day before he was left out of Fabio Capello's England squad with a chest injury, according to the Guardian.

Ferguson blamed Foster for Sunderland's second goal in the 2-2 draw at Old Trafford and felt compelled to let rip in the dressing room at full-time.

The bust-up, coupled with Foster's woeful form, leads the Daily Star to claim his future at Old Trafford is now in serious doubt.

Just as an aside which will have United fans breathing a huge sigh of relief: Edwin van der Sar made his comeback from injury last night in a reserve game win over Everton. The Dutchman kept a clean sheet.

Calls for a hefty punishment to be meted out to Ferguson for some more of his harsh words on Saturday - directed at referee Alan Wiley - are gaining momentum in this morning's papers with the fellow officials calling for a UEFA-style, no-matchday-contact-with-players ban imposed on the manager (Daily Mail).

Head of the refs' union Alan Leighton goes as far as to suggest a suspension from his job for Fergie, saying "we have to talk about punishments that are going to really lead to a change in behaviour" (The Sun).

Down to the capital, where Gianfranco Zola could be offered a way out of West Ham with Napoli offering the Italian a one-way trip home following the sacking of Roberto Donadoni (Daily Telegraph).

Zola is revered in Naples, where he won a Scudetto in his first season as a player, and they are hoping to capitalise on the current tension over finances at Upton Park by making a bid for the manager and two senior officials Gianluca Nani and Scott Duxbury.

Good news for Liverpool: the Daily Mail reveals that boss Rafa Benitez is set to be handed a January transfer kitty. Bad news: it will be a mere £12 million, which would be just about enough to lure Lazio striker Goran Pandev to Anfield. Although whether the Macedonia international is the man to rescue the Reds' season is very much open to debate.

Didier Drogba has added his two-penneth to the Patrick Vieira-to-Chelsea rumour, saying "it would be a good move for Chelsea to bring Patrick in" (The Sun). Of course, the African Cup of Nations-bound striker is forgetting that Chelsea will first have to successfully win an appeal against their 18-month transfer ban. Unless he knows something we don't?

Mark Hughes better stock on asprin - he's set to be given a big selection headache with news that Manchester City forward Robinho is on way back from injury and could be back in action a month earlier than expected (The Sun).

And finally, Newcastle keeper Tim Krul has become a shock target for Italian giants Juventus, who rate the 21-year-old Dutchman highly and are willing to pay £3m for his services in January (Daily Star). Needless to say, considering their situation in between the sticks, Manchester United are also interested.

  1. If Foster had made the same mistakes playing for England in important World Cup ties as he has done for Utd then the whole of the country would be castigating him, and I´m sure Fabio Capello would not be any too happy either!! I have nothing against the lad, but at the highest level, mistakes are crucial and are often the difference between winning and losing titles or qualification for Champions League and World Cups. Utd need a goalkeeper who is the ´finished article´ and not a ´work in process´ Foster has had his chance and unfortunately not been able to take it.

  2. foster cost us the sunderland game we had just equalised and had them on the back foot .then foster blows it by trying to catch the ball against a 6ft 4 in forward instead of punching it too safety .he also cost us two goals against city otherwise we would have murdered them instead of beating them 4-3 in added on time .he had his chance and fooked it up he will never get his confidence so drop him put kuszac in and sell foster to a championship club or send him out on loan .either way dont play him again for united this season

  8. I never really thought Ben foster was much of a keeper. average is the word that comes to mind. I believe Kusczak is better and has a better understanding with his back four. Foster is so left footed its not funny. I think Fergie shd go buy Igor Akinfeev. He is young and good

  13. Billy! What planet are you on? Where is all this diatribe coming from with you Citeh (!?!) fans? Suddenly, you think your in with a shout of winning something, and your all mouth. Would it not be better to actually win something first! It's only October! The marathon has only just started!
As for Foster, put him back in reserves til he finds his confidence again. He's felt the pressure, and more so because it is a place in the World Cup Finals up for grabs - just not ready for that pressure yet.
SAF said more than he should, but thats Fergy for you - sometimes opens his mouth (post match) without thinking of the consequences.

  14. Hi, erm, Billy (comment 31),

Interesting post. Not very good and very inconsistent, but interesting all the same.

    To expand further:
"it also proves beyond doubt that the Scum have been nothing more than a one man team for the past 6 years" - I thought Ronaldo was a one trick, overrated, show pony at least for the first 3 years of his MUFC career if nothing else??

"beloved Rag Scum's falsely claimed Glory days" - I'd say there is nothing false about that claim, or do you deny we have DOMINATED English football for about two decades now. When did you last win a trophy?

"LMFOA" - not really sure what that means? But then, you Citeh folk never were up to much intellectually were you.

I could go on, but I wont. I'll probably come back at the end of the season when we've won the title again (almost getting boring now its that easy) and Citeh have once again flopped. Until then, good luck with the UEFA cup spots and overspending on average players.

Citeh - the mugs of football (replacing Chelsea)

  15. fergie having a go at the referee after the man city game? come on fergie! even if the referee was to blame (which he wasn't) surly you have to realize that over your 100 year stay at OT you have had more decisions go for you than against you!!! missing ronaldo are you? missing a fit forward are you? missing the hatfull of goals rooney should be scoring now are you??? fergie, your not fit enough to keep ranting like this!! and if thats the case then i think you should retire and enjoy your horses in which ever way gives you the most satisfaction :-)

  20. I never thought Ben Foster was good enough for Manchester United, and that was even before his horrendous blunders this season, you need a world class goalkeeper to win the Premier league and Champions league, and that's why they've only won the Champions league when Schmeicel and Van der Sar were in goal.

When Van der Sar calls it a day United will have to splash the cash and go and buy the one of the best goalkeepers in the world. Fortunately they don't usually cost as much as egotistical forwards and midfielders who grab the limelight and hence command hefty transfer fees.
