Lewis Hamilton has put himself at odds with Bernie Ecclestone after the Formula One supremo rejected talk of racism in the sport and said recent controversies were "a joke".
Ecclestone told BBC radio that incidents in Spain and Brazil, where 23-year-old Hamilton became on Sunday the first black world champion as well as the youngest, had been blown out of proportion.
"In Spain people were supporting [Fernando] Alonso and in Sao Paulo they were supporting Felipe [Massa]," said the 78-year-old. "I don't think it has anything to do with racism.
"There were a few people in Spain ... and that was probably taken at the beginning as a joke rather than anything abusive. People sort of look and read things into things that are not there.
"All of those things are all a bit of a joke. People are entitled to support who they want to support."
Hamilton, appearing at a promotional function for McLaren team sponsor Vodafone, saw it differently.
"I don't particularly look at it as a joke," he said. "It's something that's happened but it's in the past and you've got to look forward. What's most important for me is that I know I have a lot of support, especially from my UK fans.
"I go to all these countries and I do see my fellow-countrymen holding up the flag and it makes me very proud to see that. All the other stuff, you can put it behind you and forget about it."
Hamilton, who beat Ferrari's Brazilian Massa by a single point at Interlagos, was Spaniard Alonso's team mate and title rival at McLaren last season and the Briton has been the target of racial abuse from Spanish fans.
The governing International Automobile Federation launched an anti-racism campaign after blacked-up spectators appeared at a test session in Barcelona in February, while others shouted abuse at the driver.
Another controversy erupted before last weekend's title-deciding race when British newspapers highlighted hundreds of hate messages posted on a Spanish website targeting the Briton.
Hamilton's father Anthony said earlier this week that the racial taunts and abuse had made him doubt whether his son should be competing in the sport.

This is typical of ecclestone insted of standing up and agreeing that any form of racism is not acceptable he downplays it. So once again as with everything else to do with F1 we're getting mixed messages. I reckon its time for all the old crones at the top influencing the decision making in F1 to learn to (1) speak from the same hymn sheet (2) try to engage brain before opening their mouths
lyth22 - Yours is probably the most intelligent comment I've seen her efor a long time. Wish I'd said it!
I think that white haired little maggot bernie what the Ecclestone, should have retired years ago along with that pervert Mosley, these two single minded maggots are killing all that pure racing stands for.
They should both become answerable to the public and sponsers of the sport, and realise that they are not gods.
Racism, seems more with you two, than anybody, you seem to to have a problem , more than anybody with it, keep quiet about it, dont promote it so everybody see,s you in the limelight.
racism always will exist simple because exist races. indoeuropean are different from africans, africans are different from asiatic, .... ... STOP WITH THIS HYPOCRISY. no more white in sudafrica, no more black in europe! OR WE'LL SHOW YOU..
Racism will exist as long as BBC ITV BT Yahoo keep referring to Lewis as a Black World Champion Kimi wasn't a white world Champion George Bush wasn't referred to as the 43rd white president. Lewis Hamilton is WORLD CHAMPION and Anthony is one Cool guy.
drop the labelling in reporting and get rid of the racism.
IT IS A MUST!!!!!!!!!!!!
Even if some don't consider black cats crossing the road in front of them as unlucky I can't think of a F1 team that would keep one in their pit for good luck.
mihai1x4 said 'In Brazil there was no racial abuse. There were just some black cats shown to him for bad luck. It almost worked.'
Well they worked. In the UK they are seen as lucky!

Yep, I noticed, but then that's to be expected of conspiracy theory followers. They don't want to hear the truth, so when it's presented to them they respond by putting their fingers in their ears and saying "Nah-nah-nah-nahhhhh-nah-I-can't-hear-you....& quot;. :)
mihai1x4, that's right, the racial abuse was not from Brazil. I forgot about the black cat... seems it was lucky for Lewis instead of unlucky as they'd hoped. :)
I have to admit my emotions were all over the place during the end of that race, I can't remember ever shouting so loud at the TV before, especially when Lewis passed Glock. Fantastic moment. :)
Thanks for that Bill Mac. :) That's right, the evidence supporting the moon landings is overwhelming, and all the points raised by the conspiracy theorists have since been debunked over the years, and recently by the programme MythBusters (search youtube for MythBusters+moon). :D
In Brazil there was no racial abuse. There were just some black cats shown to him for bad luck. It almost worked.
why the sick racist comments,PELE one of the all time greats was black and brazilian, and like most latino countries, many of there own population hardly look white,if they cannot learn decency or respect remove the gp's somewhere else, i am sure many countries would jump at the chance
I think that Ecclestone is a coward and that he is a secret racist as he did not have the guts to come out and slam the Spanish racists when he had the chance. He now needs to cancel the Spanish GP as a punishment and hold it in Canada instead,at least the Canadians know how to be unbiased. The next thing he needs to do is have the bottle to own up to his own short comings and resign.
The pic of lewis and his dad is really wonderful. Proud dad and delighted son. Take a look all you racists and think - this is probably what you missed as a kid and the result is your sadly warped mind. Well done Lewis.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT THE BOOING IN BRAZIL. This is about the comments and actions seen throughout this year, from the Spanish supporters blackening their faces and wearing wigs, to comments posted on websites, to things we probably haven't heard about, such as phone calls and letters (speculation I know, but very likely). Hence it's very easy to say they're making a fuss over nothing, or that was all a joke, when you're not the ones on the receiving end. So this is far from playing the race card for sympathy or gain.
racism, as well as any other prejudice, is ab-so-freaking-lute-ly UNACCEPTABLE... having said that, i know that UNFORTUNATELY it is alive and doing well... thus, i find it hard to believe that 'this' is hamilton's 'first' experience at being targeted... and, although he SHOULD bring attention to it, hamilton and his father should NOT make it seem as if they have 'never' seen it in england... n.b. any attention brought to this insidious mentality should be based on the hope of eradicating it and not as a means to justify or rationalize, nor to garner sympathy...
I'm always dubious when the racism card comes out, not sure if it was in Brazil, if I'm honest if the last race of the season was at Silverstone I'd(if I wasn't so sporting) would have been booing Massa, doesn't make me a racist, as for the Spanish stuff, it's inbred in there country, you only have to look at their ex footy coaches comments about Thierry Henry. there's just some pig ignorant @#$% wits out there.
But hey, who's got the last laugh eh,24 year old multi millionaire racing driver with a girlfriend to die for, who's also the world champion and could well be for a few years to come and last Sunday made me very pround to be English for once!!!!
