UEFA Cup - McClaren: 'I want shooting'

Eurosport - Fri, 07 Nov 08:15:00 2008

FC Twente coach Steve McClaren has said he "needs shooting" if his experience as England manager has not made him stronger.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 UEFA Cup - FC Twente coach Steve McClaren - 0

The former national team boss is back on home soil, with his Twente side set to face Manchester City in the UEFA Cup on Thursday.

McClaren lasted only 18 matches in charge of England and paid the price when they failed to qualify for Euro 2008. A year on, he is trying to reignite his career in the Netherlands.

Asked if he was stronger for his England experience, McClaren said: "If I am not, I want shooting again, considering all the lessons that should have been learned.

"I hope I have learned. That is what I am trying to prove in whatever I do. You want to do your best.

"I am not in rehab. That word is not for me. It is part of my career, not rehab. I am experiencing a different culture, a different environment.

"One of the reasons I took the job in Holland is because it is a great football country and one with a great tradition, not just for players but for coaches.

"I always wanted to experience working abroad and am glad I have done so. I am too busy to think about English football: my focus is on Holland and the competition there."

McClaren has embraced the culture already and is trying to learn Dutch.

"It is difficult as the people here will tell you," he said. "But things are going well at the moment. I am enjoying it and working with a young team.

"The club is excellent. We have big games. That is why I came to Holland, to experience that; and also to learn."

Even though McClaren maintains Twente have improved since losing 6-0 on aggregate to Arsenal in the Champions League, he claims they are underdogs against City.

He said: "We need to make a good start, the first 20 minutes will be very important as we know City are good at home. They have a lot of attacking options with a star like Robinho to call on, so it will be tough for us.

"The pressure is all on City, not us, and I would take a draw at this moment."

  1. Mcclaren didn't do well for England, but wasn't everyone saying that about Sven until last season, when he was doing well @ City? I personally don't see why they sacked him in the first place, but England players really over rate them selves, its about time they came off cloud nine!! You can't just blame the manager, it was the players fault 2! None of them show any pride in playing for their country! Well things are starting to improve, I just hope England get an English manager one day!

  2. Steve Mclaren is a fine coach, with good experince at Derby County and Manchester United. He did not have much luck as England manager, but he has had the guts to restart in holland with FC Twente, so he worthy of respect.

  5. I dont think "anthony914" knows a thing about football. I dont think Ronaldo got player of the world just for his goals (plays in "middle" of the field by the way). He is the best player in the world. Gerrrard is good but he could not lace the boots of Ronaldo.Different class.

  8. i agree with comment 63. Sven had to go and the england lot knew the fans wouldn't let them bring in a foreign manager straight away so Steve McClaren was made the scape goat, he didn't get any support, especially not from the fans who were against him from the word go. Who else would've taken the job after the Sven saga? If they had brought in Fabio Cappelo at that point all the fans would've gone crazy cos most believed an english manager would do the best job. I agree Steve McClaren did make mistakes but i do think the england players had a part to play in failing to qualify for euro 2008, they are all good players in their teams but that doesnt mean they'll play well together!

  12. Steve McLaren was given the job because Sven was given little alternative but to leave.I blame Jamie Carragher and Paul Scholes for not eating humble pie for one game by playing in order to let us qualify for Euro 2008.SM was given little support by the hierarchy in the England set up and they appeared to rejoice at his failure.Steve is far better a manager than he has ever been given credit for.Sure,he made some mistakes but who does not!

  13. Mclaren is a idiot. He lost england a place in the Euro2008. He might be a good club manager but he can't deal with a country.

  14. Steve McLaren is one of the most boring football managers around. His England side for the 2008 euro qualifiers was a disaster, should not be allowed back in UK.

  16. gerrard would get in any premier league team and any top team in the world!! he is as good as anyone for what he brings to the game. Kaka and co are sensational but when was the last time one of them had dirty shorts from tackling back in their own box. gerrard is the whole package. ronaldo gets world player of the year for his goal tally but the other 75 mins of the game he is diving and being a soft ar*e!!
have u ever acctually played footy at a decent level like most on here prob havn't?
easy to judge from your armchair.

  19. McClaren is not a nice man, I've met him a number of times. He is a very arrogant man, who believes in himself, more than anyone else ever will. The FA were mad to give him the England job. The Boro fans couldn't believe their luck, he was taken off their hands, and paid for the privillege. It was just a pity for the England football team. I don't know many footballers, or ex-footballers who have much respect for the guy. Good luck Holland. You're going to need it.

  20. Neither of them would get near the top international teams. Not as good as Xavi senna and fabragas for spain, or pirlo and gattuso for Italy, riquelme and mass for argentina, kaka and ronaldinho for Brazil or the likes of zidane and vierra of past. Neither are playmakers like scholes was. They are high energy, box to box players but dont posses the killer qualities a great midfielder needs. They get away with it at club level because they are playing beside playeras that will carry them.
