Murray mauls Montanes in Valencia

Top seed Andy Murray gave Spaniard Albert Montanes a 6-4 6-2 mauling in the quarter-finals of the Valencia Open as the Briton continued his comeback from a wrist injury.

The world number four, who before this week had not played on the ATP tour since September's US Open, dropped a set against little-known Argentine Leonardo Mayer in Thursday's second round but looked back on top form against Montanes, ranked 34.

He broke serve four times on the way to winning the first set and opening a 4-0 lead in the second and wrapped up the match with a forehand winner.

"My wrist is still giving me some pain but I am feeling better every day," Murray said at the Spanish hardcourt event.

"I played well today and tomorrow I hope to improve even more."

The Scot will play Fernando Verdasco in Saturday's semi-finals after the Spanish fourth seed nailed a slew of crashing winners to brush aside compatriot and seventh seed Tommy Robredo 6-3 6-2.

Verdasco's win and a victory earlier on Friday for Russian second seed Nikolay Davydenko means they both remain on track to secure the remaining two places at the World Tour Finals in London later this month.

Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Murray, Juan Martin del Potro and Andy Roddick have all qualified for the November 22-29 season-ending event and Davydenko holds seventh spot and Verdasco eighth.

Davydenko beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-4 7-6 and will contest a place in Sunday's final with compatriot Mikhail Youzhny, who maintained his dominance over Gilles Simon by beating the French fifth seed 6-4 6-4.

Youzhny saved all 11 break points he faced and it was his fifth victory in five meetings between the pair.

Verdasco's win ended both Simon's and Robredo's hopes of securing a place in London.

  2. I don't think Andy expects to be back at his best yet. He will be aiming at peaking for the ATP finals. He is such a hard worker behind the scenes, the training he does is amazing. He is always so modest and complimentary about other players, no arrogance at all in his persona. Britain is proud of him.

  3. Belgrade should be worth two and a half points but why would any sane person want to play in a war zone ?

  5. pv: Djokovic hasn't beaten Murray since 2007 and has lost the last 3 Matches to him and also Murray is one of the only players to have a winning record against Federer. Scared? Think it should be them that are more scared of him. He played Valencia last year so he's just defending points..........simple!

Why Murray chose ATP Valencia and not ATP Basel? Is he too scared to face RF and Djokovic? I'd say "the Briton continued his comeback from a wrist injury" too many handdddjobbbbs.

  8. comment # 25 another deranged poor foreign tard who prefers to rant and express his ill-informed opinion before che4cking the facts - yeah it must be a 250 point tournament , that's why it's called the Valencia 500 - IDIOT !!!

there are 2 500 point torunaments this week ( the other being in Switzerland ) and the only one of the top 4 missing is Nadal.

now go tend to your mountain goats, they're getting a bit frisky dear abdurraz

British journalism at its worst. Pumping up the loser as usual. Down from a falsely obtained No2 to a number 4 which is still too high for this piece of rubbish. He takes one step forward and three backwards. Its not a question of his ability it is a question of his attitude. He has an arrogance which is underserved for what little he has done. He has a lazy attitude and his work rate is pathetic. You will lose today - as usual one forwards and three backwards and we will have the journalists saying "Murray was great but beaten" pathetic

but by the way I love Murry emotional display during his games .that`s not normal for the cold english usual attitude.. he really energize the game with his passion.
but still his style of play is defensive .which would restrict his success in the future.

so what !!!it`s just a 250 tournament in some where in Europe where basically no body of the top 3 players plays .so why all the fuss about that ?............................. "mauling =is such over-hyped over rated expression" it`s just a usual score.
but always murry is trashing and knocking every-bodies` @#$% when he`s winning even with small margin.
but djokovic always trails everybody else when he`s winning . such an obvious BIAS

  15. some of you really need to take this a little less seriously and quit moaning about the use of the word "mauls"

if you can't see that they have written that title to fit in with the perenially popular activity of naff title alliteration ( look it up in the dictionary if you don't understand or are thick ) then you really are blind.

happens all the time : - " Federer thrashes Fish " "Nadal knocks out Novak " " Liverpool lash Leeds " " Sexy Susan's Sunshine Sizzles"

Do you get the idea yet ? Nobody believes 6-4 6-2 is a real mauling but it gives them the excuse to write what they consider to be a witty alliteration.

personally, I would have preferred " Murray mounts Montanes " ( and gives him one up the clanker hole )

    Ray,
Murray is a news here, on this page, not Novak, or Basel !
Anyway.. I can tell you that you will see the final match with Novak.. Who will win depends on Novak only. I Say if Novak will play like today, he has very good chances against Fed in the finals, especially home ground WILL NOT be the boost for Fed in the finals - Fed will be very nervous, knowing who is he playing against..
