Premier League - Your view: Berbatov edges Fab

Eurosport - Fri, 06 Nov 15:16:00 2009

As often as not there's a clear winner in our goal-of-the-week polls but this time two different strikes went neck-and-neck, with tens of thousands of votes cast in a choice that came right down to the wire.

2009-10 Premier LEague Manchester United's Dimitar Berbatov celebrates goal against Blackburn - 0

But when the dust settled and the final votes were tallied, the winner was Dimitar Berbatov, whose brilliant piece of skill broke the deadlock against Blackburn at Old Trafford. Even controlling Patrice Evra's powerful ball in to the box seemed unlikely enough; but to flip it up, spin himself around in mid air and despatch a ruthless volley to the bottom left corner was quite sublime.

But as great as that goal was, the result seems a little harsh on Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas, whose solo effort from the half-way line left literally saw him escape literally half of the Tottenham side and leave Harry Redknapp's side scratching their heads. The Spanish wizard picked the ball up from a deflection just inside the Spurs half before his mixture of fizzing acceleration, perfect balance and deft control got him in position to smash the ball into the net.

Didier Drogba's side-footed effort to drive the nail in Bolton's coffin turned up in third place, but if the striker's finish had been even half as attractive as the wonderful ball-juggling in the build-up then Dimitar and Cesc might have had a bit more competition for top spot.

The only other strike that troubled the scorers was Fernando Torres's neat volley against Fulham, which was in fourth place. Although scoring the consolation goal in a 3-1 defeat is bit like finding a pound on the floor of the church during your gran's funeral.

Poll results - Best goal of the weekend?

Dimitar Berbatov (Man Utd v Blackburn) 36% - 8053 votes

Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal v Tottenham) 35% - 7910 votes

Didier Drogba (Chelsea at Bolton) 13% - 3142 votes

Fernando Torres (Liverpool at Fulham) 12% - 2864 votes

25650 votes (at 7am UK time on Saturday November 7)

The Tottenham reject Dimitar Berbatov scored a great goal last weekend and must give a lot of credit to Tottenham for teaching him such skills whilst he was at The Lane.
Arsenal were ucky last week as we had Defoe and Lennon missing.Once they are back the Cooners will be quaking in their boots.Once our new stadium is built, rumour has it that The Emirates Stadium will be demolished to provide a car park for the best stadium in the world!

  12. I went through again and again to compare Berba goal and that of Fab...all have their individual charm and brilliance... but if we weigh them according to the difficulties( control/ turning and shoot at that edge/angle ) ...Berba goal take the lead. But if you are really fanatic in rivalty or if you like valuable in the name of ...Fab goal may win in this aspect. All in all Berba goal will still be on the most high!

  14. Wow...I am Arsenal fan. Whatever said whatever concern Arsenal I always for gunners. But to be honest and regarding sportmanship and last not least fair play...Berba goal was just the awesome stuff. I watch this guy Berba for a long time since when he was in Cska Sofia , Leverkusen, Totenham(The rivals). And the very interesting thing is that I like his kind of play, technic, fast thinking and finess. This is not kind of player Rooney/Drogba type, .....muscles rugby type. I give the credit to Berba...no matter that all the time is playing with rival team..(.in Sofia always cheer for Levski he was was for CSKA, Germany -Borussia Dortmund fan...he was Leverkursen, England...I am Arsenal he was IN Archirivals side Spurs, and now again ManUnited). I wish him well and let him score such unique goals but not against my teams hahahaha. Have fun y'all!

  15. It's just an internet voting, don't take it too seriously. Both goals were moments of brilliance we were happy to see, does it really matter which one is voted best? Nearly always it's hard to define clearly smth as "the best" and practically impossible everyone to agree with that.
Just try and enjoy the masterpieces provided by the EPL players and don't say they are rubbish just because they are from a team you don't like, whichever that might be.
